Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my desire to work in the Project Management Department. I have been working in my Quality department for over two years and I have worked with cross-functional teams and leaders.

Additionally, I have recently completed my Master's in Project Management. Given my current experience in quality management and with my Master's degree, I believe it would be beneficial for my career. Since this would be a department change, there may not be a need for extensive additional training, as I already work with the product frequently With my current experience, I have already gathered pain points and have ideas to improve current process, which would be beneficial for the company.

I like the vision, product, and leadership of the company and I do not wish to leave the company. It would be my pleasure to work on company's vision and help company grow. I would be obliged if you can consider this request and help with this transition. I would also be happy to continue handling my current responsibilities until a replacement is found. Looking forward for your response.

Yours faithfully,

PK

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned in your current role, explain the benefits to the company of your transfer, and express your commitment to the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples of the 'pain points' you have identified or the specific skills gained in your current department, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more professional level of detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Since', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. At times, the connection between sentences feels slightly mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this transition') is always precise would enhance the overall cohesion of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'cross-functional teams' and 'transition' are used correctly in a professional context. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'gathered pain points' (usually 'identified' or 'uncovered') and 'help company grow' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated business-related collocations would elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as the missing punctuation in 'product frequently With my current experience' and the missing article in 'help company grow'. Additionally, 'Looking forward for your response' should be 'Looking forward to your response'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading to ensure consistent accuracy in complex structures.
