Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest of working in the accounting department for the growth of the company.

Firstly, I have gained valuable experience during my two year tenure in this firm. Secondly, I have learned several skills, which includes how to manage the company's database, filing reports, and bookkeeping. Lastly, I have enhanced my accounting skills that has enabled me to resolve financial queries for team projects.

The advantage of moving me to the accounting department will help reduce the workload on finance team. Moreover, I know how to use artificial intelligence tools that can help resolve issues quickly and could save an ample amount of time for our team.

I feel it is crucial for me to utilize my skills and contribute to the growth of the company. Also, I really admire work ethics and culture of this organization and want to stay for long term.

I would appreciate your immediate attention to this request.

Thanks.

Regards,

Pankaj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your current experience, explain the benefits of your transfer to the accounting department, and express your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention using AI tools, explaining exactly how these would specifically benefit the accounting department would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. While the use of these cohesive devices is effective, the paragraphing is slightly fragmented; the third paragraph is quite short and could have been integrated into the previous one to improve the flow. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is logical, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'valuable experience', 'two year tenure', and 'financial queries' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common professional terminology. For example, instead of 'help reduce the workload', you could use 'alleviate the administrative burden'. The vocabulary is functional and accurate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'interest of working' (should be 'interest in working') and 'skills, which includes' (should be 'skills, which include'). Additionally, 'that has enabled' should be 'that have enabled' to agree with the plural 'accounting skills'. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally correct. The errors do not interfere with the reader's understanding of your request.
