Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request you to move me to a different department in the same company for my career development.
I have been working as a receptionist in your company for last two years. I have learned several things in my current job such as communication, handling distinct customers, discipline and many more.
Recently, I cleared the CAPM (certified associate of project management) exam which is important to get into the management field. If I get a chance to move to a project management department then the company would get benefit because I have learned the basic fundamentals of the project management which are essential for projects. I have learned about resource, budget, and time management which could benefit the company because these terms are important for any project.
I do not want to leave the company because it is like home to me. All the employees are my friends and I feel comfortable with them. Moreover, the culture of the company is very adorable.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
John.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned as a receptionist, explain the benefits of your move to the project management department by referencing your recent CAPM certification, and provide a sincere reason for wanting to stay with the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your current skills and the new role is even more explicitly linked to the company's specific goals, rather than just general project management theory.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing the specific requirements, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single main idea, which makes the progression of your argument easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'If I get a chance' to link your ideas. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'career development,' 'fundamentals,' and 'consideration' correctly. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'handling distinct customers' (which should be 'diverse' or 'various') and 'culture of the company is very adorable' (which is not a standard collocation for a corporate environment). Using more precise professional terminology would elevate your score. Focus on learning collocations that are commonly used in business correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'for last two years' (missing the article 'the') and 'the company would get benefit' (which should be 'benefit the company' or 'the company would benefit'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of articles and verb-object structures. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but increasing the variety of complex structures would improve your range.
