You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Anderson,

I have completed 2 years in the company and I am pretty happy with the job and the company. The company gives plenty of opportunities to learn and it has been an absolute pleasure to be part of this establishment. During my job as a Software Developer, I got the opportunity to learn how to manage customer relationships with the clients. I am grateful for the diverse projects I got to do, giving me the platform to gain different skills.

I got to know about a Senior Software Developer role in SaaS Products department. I am quite interested in this role as I think that would give me the opportunity to procure a different set of skills like building consumer websites and applications. If I am selected, I will be able to work on B2C products, which will help me to further expand my skillset and grow in my career.

I have got a job offer from another company to work in a similar role as mentioned above, but I am keen on continuing my job here as I feel a sense of comfort in this company and I deeply believe in the mission of the company.

I would be obliged, if you could recommend me for this position. Looking forward to a positive reply.

Yours sincerely,

Adam Gilbert

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your current learning experiences, explain the benefits to the company of your potential move, and provide a convincing reason for wanting to stay within the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear purpose for the communication. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples of the 'customer relationships' managed or the specific 'mission' of the company to add depth to your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from your current situation to your future aspirations and finally your commitment to the company. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'During my job', 'If I am selected', and 'I am keen on' to link your sentences effectively. While the structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard. Incorporating a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the flow and make the transitions between ideas feel more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'diverse projects', 'procure', and 'skillset' appropriately. The language is generally natural and fits the professional context well. However, there are some instances where the word choice could be more precise or varied. For example, phrases like 'pretty happy' and 'got to know' are slightly informal for a formal business letter. Using more academic or professional alternatives would elevate the overall quality of your writing and demonstrate a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence 'If I am selected, I will be able to...'. The grammar is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. There are a few minor errors, such as 'I have completed 2 years in the company' (better as 'I have been with the company for two years') and the unnecessary comma in 'I would be obliged, if you could...'. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further improve your score.
