Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my interest in moving to a different department, as I believed it would be indispensable for my career development.
As I have been working for the past two years in my current position, I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skill, learned how to solve problems quickly and efficiently. I have become quite confident to work independently and as part of a team.
I believe company would benefit from transferring me to a customers service department. My past experience and familiarity with the company's operation would enable me to fit quickly in the new role and contribute more positively towards the organization. I can utilize my skills and knowledge to build strong business relationships with customers.
Although, I am looking for new challenges, I do not have any intentions to leave the company. I am extremely comfortable and appreciated the supportive environment by the management. I would like to enhance my career development, while continue working within the company.
I would greatly appreciate your understanding. I would be happy to discuss this opportunity further at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Harmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline the skills learned in your current role, explain the benefits of your transfer to the customer service department, and provide a convincing rationale for remaining with the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more elaborated; for instance, you could provide a specific example of a problem you solved or a particular project you contributed to, which would add more depth to your professional profile.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although' and 'As I have been' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between some sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from discussing your current skills to the suggestion of moving departments is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking phrases like 'Building on this experience' or 'Furthermore' would help improve the flow and demonstrate a more sophisticated control of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal context, such as 'indispensable', 'contribute', and 'at your convenience'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'appreciated the supportive environment by the management' (should be 'appreciated the supportive environment provided by management'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional collocations would elevate your writing. You have a solid foundation, but focusing on natural word pairings will help you move toward a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For example, 'as I believed it would be' should be 'as I believe it would be' to maintain consistent tense, and 'skill' should be pluralized as 'skills'. Additionally, 'while continue working' should be 'while continuing to work'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
