Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr.Parthipan,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my feelings on the importance of my career development in our company.

I started working at our company at 2023 as a Xray Technician. Since then, I have a gained quite a lot of experience in this field. The interactions with a lot of senior staffs made me realise how great our company is in this city. Through them i learnt a lot of amazing skills such as operating fluroscopy machines single handedly and taking xrays in a single take. This made me accomplish my tasks faster and simpler.

But now, I feel I am eligible for a shift to the department of Mri where i can get hands on in the clinical mri studies. This move will motivate me learn and work in newer technologies such as cardiac mri and their techniques. I also have atteneded a workshop which demonstrated the working of mri which helped me learn the basics clearly. Therefore, I am sure I will be useful to this department by executing the cases faster.

I wish not to leave the company in the fore future as this company has been a stepping stone in my life. It gave me my first job and I am sure iI will be an asset to this company.

Yours faithfully,

Harry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outline your experience as an X-ray technician, explain the benefits of your transfer to the MRI department, and express your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate further on how your specific skills in the X-ray department would translate into efficiency within the MRI department. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since then', 'Therefore', and 'But now', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between some sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression. For example, the link between your workshop attendance and your future utility to the department could be more explicitly connected using more sophisticated cohesive markers to avoid a slightly mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'fluoroscopy' and 'clinical MRI studies'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'senior staffs' (staff is an uncountable noun) and 'fore future' (which is not a standard idiomatic expression). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a wider range of less common, precise collocations would elevate your score. Focus on using more natural phrasing for professional correspondence to demonstrate greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'at 2023' (should be 'in 2023'), 'I have a gained' (unnecessary article), and 'atteneded' (spelling error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'i' instead of 'I' and 'mri' instead of 'MRI'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization of professional acronyms.
