IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request a transfer from my current department to a different one for learning new business skills to enhance my career development.

I was hired as a Production Technician in the dispensing department where I have learned a lot about different techniques of performing business tasks. Moreover, working with teams and sharing opinions with colleagues made my communication and team management skills more effective.

I believe moving to the Quality Assurance department not only provides me with several new things to learn but also increases the productivity of the company. Since I have experience in checking documents and designing test plans, I would feel the company will meet high-quality standards for its final products.

Undoubtedly, I do not want to leave this company because of its reputation and work procedures. I want to be a part of some of the international projects, which is only possible if I move to a different department. Additionally, this company has the best work environment among others which gives me peace of mind while working.

I hope you will consider my request and provide me with a date to transfer soon.

Thank you,

Gurpreet Mahi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline your current experience as a Production Technician, explain the benefits of your transfer to Quality Assurance, and provide valid reasons for wanting to stay within the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business request. To improve, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mention that your move would increase productivity, providing a more specific example of how your skills would directly impact the Quality Assurance department would strengthen the argument further.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your logic easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Since', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraph could be smoother. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than following a rigid structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'enhance', 'productivity', and 'procedures'. The language is generally accurate and conveys your meaning clearly. There are a few instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'several new things to learn' which is slightly informal. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and professional terminology related to business and career development to elevate the overall tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally strong, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is correct. There are minor areas for improvement, such as the phrasing 'I would feel the company will meet', which could be more naturally expressed as 'I am confident that the company will meet'. Overall, your control over complex structures is good, and your errors do not impede communication at all.
