IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Joseph,

I am writing to express my interest in moving to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step in my career development.

During the past two years in my current position, I have gained valuable experience in dealing with customers, managing daily tasks effectively and working as part of a team. I have also developed strong communication and problem-solving skills, especially when handling difficult situations and meeting deadlines.

I believe that getting a transfer to the marketing department, for example, would benefit not only the company but also me. As I have experience in content creations from last three years, and my background in business analytics would make me a perfect candidate for this position as well.

As I have been working with this company for more than two years, I have sentimental value for this place, and I have a better understanding and bond with the colleagues as well. On top of that, the company provide the position that I have actually been looking for for a long time, so there is no option for me to leave this better opportunity and the company.

Yours sincerely,

Kirtan Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline your experience in the current role, provide a logical suggestion for how the company would benefit from your transfer, and explain your commitment to the organization. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the justification for the transfer. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your specific skills and the new department is even more explicitly linked to the company's goals, rather than just your personal career development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'During the past two years', 'On top of that', and 'For example' are used appropriately to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. The transition between your current experience and the desire to stay within the company is smooth. The structure is consistent and supports the overall purpose of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'career development', 'valuable experience', and 'problem-solving skills'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'content creations' (should be 'content creation') and 'sentimental value' (which is slightly unnatural in a professional context; 'strong loyalty' or 'deep appreciation' would be better). However, these errors do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally, showing an awareness of the appropriate register for a formal letter to a manager.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the company provide the position' (should be 'the company provides') and 'looking for for a long time' (repetition of 'for'). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong. The grammar does not interfere with the clarity of your request, and you demonstrate a good command of tense usage.
