Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear manager,

I hope you are doing good. I am writing this letter to request you to change my department in this company. Couple of years ago I joined this company as a beginner.

Now with the help of you and other employees I have learned how to solve any problem and find their solutions. Until now I am working in website department and I also learned about AI. I have learned a lot of things like how to create websites, how to update them, how to deal with the customers and so on. My study is related to AI and i also have experience in this field as I have completed my studies as well.

I think it will also be very beneficial for the company if you change me from website department to AI department. I have done a lot to be perfect in this field and you also know how much potential I have.

I would appreciate if you change my department and give me chance to work with other employees.

Warm regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned, suggest how the company would benefit from your move, and explain your desire to stay. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of how the company would benefit is limited to a vague claim about being 'perfect in this field.' To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples of how your AI skills could solve current company problems or improve efficiency. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional request, though it leans slightly informal in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to your experience, the proposal, and finally the request. Paragraphing is present, though the paragraphs are quite short and could be better balanced. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Until now' and 'I think,' but the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' or 'In light of this.'

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. You rely on simple phrases like 'learned a lot of things' and 'do a lot to be perfect.' While these communicate your meaning, they do not demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary. There are also some minor issues with word choice, such as 'change me from website department,' which sounds unnatural. Incorporating more professional, industry-specific terminology would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are doing good' (should be 'well'), 'change my department in this company' (should be 'transfer to a different department'), and 'with the help of you' (should be 'with your help'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in 'i also have experience.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
