Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in moving to a different department within a country. Having worked in my present position for the past two years, I feel that this would be an excellent opportunity for my professional development.

During my time in the present department, I have gained valuable experience in managing daily responsibilities, communicating effectively with collogues and customers, and working efficiently under pressure. I also developed strong organizational and problem solving skills, which I believe could be useful in another department.

I believe the company would benefits from transferring me because I could bring my existing knowledge and experience to a new team while learning additional skills. As I already familiar with the company policies, procedures and work culture, I would require less training than a new employee and could contribute to the department quickly.

However, I would not like to leave the company because, I have had a positive experience here. I appreciate the supportive working environment and opportunities to developed my skills.

Thank you for time and consideration.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application and discuss further opportunities with me.

Yours faithfully,

Hemali Chauh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly outline the skills gained in your current role, explain the mutual benefits of a transfer, and express your commitment to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To improve, ensure that you proofread carefully; for instance, you mentioned moving to a different department 'within a country' instead of 'within the company,' which is a significant slip that could confuse the reader. Otherwise, the ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'During my time,' 'I also,' and 'However' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the message effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'professional development,' 'organizational skills,' and 'supportive working environment.' However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'collogues' (colleagues) and 'developed' (develop), and minor word-choice slips like 'benefits' instead of 'benefit.' These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent a higher score. To reach a higher band, focus on accurate spelling and ensuring that your word forms (e.g., verb tenses) are consistent with the surrounding sentence structure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As I am already familiar with the company policies... I would require less training.' There are several grammatical slips, such as 'As I already familiar' (missing the verb 'am') and 'opportunities to developed' (should be 'develop'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the sentence structures are generally functional. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences and focusing on subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
