IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

The purpose of writing this letter is to request a move from the teaching faculty department to the section-head department.

I have been working at this school for almost two years. I am beyond grateful for your guidance. I have learned a lot during these two years about teaching young minds. However, for my career growth, I feel it is important for me to step out of my comfort zone and start learning new things.

In addition, during these years, I have gained skills in interacting with the children knowing them closely and interacting with parents. I have gained their trust, which will help me further to enhance our education system. On the brighter side, the school will benefit from it as they will have someone who can represent the school more neutrally.

This school has given me a new positive perspective which is why I do not wish to leave but instead want to continue in a newer department.

Thank you for your consideration. Hope to hear from you soon

Yours Sincerely,

Sambridhi Silakar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You successfully mention what you have learned in your present job ('gained skills in interacting with the children knowing them closely and interacting with parents'), suggest how the company would benefit from moving to a different department ('represent the school more neutrally'), and explain why you do not wish to leave the company ('This school has given me a new positive perspective which is why I do not wish to leave'). The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and adequately developed, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as 'However', 'In addition', and 'This school has given me'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your opening, body points regarding learning and company benefits, and your concluding reasons for staying. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional transitional links could be smoother to reach a higher band. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, fitting the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary has an adequate range for the task and demonstrates a good attempt at less common phrases such as 'step out of my comfort zone' and 'positive perspective'. However, there are some minor awkwardness issues in word choice and collocation, such as 'section-head department' instead of a standard management or administrative department, and 'children knowing them closely' which lacks proper punctuation and phrasing. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing your lexical range firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although/However' structures and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, for instance, missing commas in compound structures and the phrasing 'Hope to hear from you soon' lacking a final period. Despite these minor errors, they rarely impede communication and the majority of your sentences remain clear and understandable. This corresponds well to the Band 6.0 descriptors for grammatical accuracy.
