Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to you about my career development. I am working in this company from last two years. I have learned a lot of things from my job like how to be a good team member, how to maintain professionalism in office and mainly the customer service.

Now, I feel that I should move to different department in this company beacuse it is important step for my career development. I have already worked in sales and got experience now I want to move in finance department. i have studied Finance in my university which means i have knowledge and also experience. You will also get benefit like a long term employee you will get.

I do not want to leave this company because the environment to this place is really good. Employees get appreciation for their work which is very important but some companies miss this part.

Thankyou for your time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student has addressed all parts of the prompt, successfully covering what has been learned in the present job, suggesting how the company would benefit from the transfer, and explaining why they wish to remain at the company. For example, the writer mentions learning 'how to be a good team member' and customer service, suggests the company will retain a loyal 'long term employee,' and notes that 'the environment to this place is really good.' However, some points are slightly under-developed or expressed with limited elaboration, such as the benefit to the company which feels somewhat abrupt. Overall, the requirements of General Training Task 1 are covered well, positioning this response firmly at Band 6.5, rounded to Band 6 for partial under-development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement and follows an appropriate structure with a standard greeting, body paragraphs, and a closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as current learning, the proposed department move, and reasons for staying. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases between sentences are occasionally missing or awkward, such as the sudden shift in the second paragraph: 'i have studied Finance in my university which means i have knowledge and also experience.' Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical progression between sentences could be smoother with more varied cohesive devices. Overall, these features align well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday workplace concepts. Examples include 'career development,' 'maintain professionalism,' and 'finance department.' However, there are noticeable lexical limitations and minor word choice inaccuracies, such as writing 'working in this company from last two years' instead of 'for the last two years,' and 'the environment to this place' instead of 'the environment at this place.' Less common vocabulary is attempted with some inaccuracy, and spelling errors like 'beacuse' and lowercase 'i' detract from lexical control. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, placing it directly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to you about my career development' and 'Now, I feel that I should move to different department in this company beacuse it is important step for my career development.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation oversights, including missing articles ('to different department,' 'important step'), preposition errors ('working... from last two years'), and capitalization errors (lowercase 'i'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, as the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. This blend of structures and error frequency is characteristic of Band 6 performance.
