Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to request you that I am working in your company from last two yers as a receptionist. But, now I am thinking that I should need a promotion in your financial department. I have learned lot about the management process and also, the customer service while working at this position. I also have qualification regarding the finance job and you have also seen my capability while working at your company already.

If you will promote me to the finanace department I will handle all the cash flow and out statements and also manage the payroll alone. While doing receptionist job at your company I have gained the experience of this department by taking online classes. This will help you to reduce the cost of company as you have not to hire any other employee to make payrolls seprately. Moreover, I will be punctual at work and will complete all the work in the given amount of time.

I like the team management and cooperation between all the employees. Additionally, the working environment is also good at your workplace. This is the reason I do not want to leave your company.

Looking for a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Inderveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt, though the development is somewhat mixed. For the first bullet point, the candidate mentions learning management processes and customer service as a receptionist. For the second bullet point, the candidate suggests that moving to the finance department will help reduce costs and manage payroll, though the idea is somewhat underdeveloped. For the final bullet point, the candidate clearly explains that they enjoy the good working environment and team cooperation, which explains why they do not wish to leave the company. While the tone is mostly appropriate for a letter to a manager, some parts blur the line between a standard internal transfer request and an overly direct promotion demand. Overall, the requirements of the task are adequately covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear logical organisation, using paragraphing to separate different parts of the prompt, such as experience, benefits to the company, and reasons for staying. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'While doing receptionist job', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of 'and also'. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression is easy to follow from the greeting to the sign-off, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'receptionist', 'management process', 'qualification regarding the finance job', and 'cash flow'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as 'twos yers' (years), 'finanace', 'seprately' (separately), and awkward phrasing like 'thinking that I should need a promotion'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6, as the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and contains frequent minor slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses ('If you will promote me...') and relative clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including tense and preposition issues like 'I am working... from last two yers', subject-verb agreement errors, and incorrect modal usage ('you have not to hire'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical inaccuracies keeps the performance at a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of Band 5 and Band 6 characteristics where complex structures are frequently faulty.
