Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. The writer successfully outlines what they have learned in their current job, specifically mentioning material analysis, growth culture, and bacterial isolation. Furthermore, the writer suggests company benefits such as contributing positively to the new Biochemistry team using their dissertation experience on cancer cells. Finally, the writer clearly explains why they do not wish to leave the company, highlighting satisfaction with the working environment and company benefits. Although the register is occasionally informal (e.g., 'a new challenge is chased'), the task is fully addressed with relevant ideas and a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall structure and logical progression of ideas, with each paragraph addressing a distinct bullet point. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to divide the introduction, experience, career move proposal, reasons for staying, and the sign-off. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly deployed, such as starting the fourth paragraph with 'however, a new challenge is chased'. Referencing is generally clear, though minor cohesive slips keep the response from reaching a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Subject-specific terms such as 'Microbiology department', 'material analysis', 'bacterial isolation', and 'dissertation' are used accurately. However, there are some noticeable word choice errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'apply new position on same company' instead of 'apply for a new position in the same company' and 'a new challenge is chased'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical range lacks the flexibility and precision required for a Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am working in our food company ... last two years' (omitting 'for') and lowercase letters at the beginnings of sentences and after full stops (e.g., 'additionally', 'however', 'please'). Capitalisation and punctuation issues recur. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
