Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

Greetings for the day!

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding an opportunity of switching my department and job role within this organization. The role is vacant in Information Security department which is recently created.

Being in Administration department from last 2 years as an Assistant Team Lead, I have learned a lot about physical security aspects, organization policies, vendor management, Access controls, drills related to emergency events. Apart from these function specific work, being in my first job I have also learned the culture of cooperate, discipline, punctuality, and work life balance.

As it's been 2 years working in this organization, I clearly knows the mission and vision of the company and it's growth in future. Alongwith the growth of the company, I am seeing my growth as well. Being in a new department, I'll be able to explore more about my skills and can have more exposure to a totally new field where I'll be starting as a fresher.

I cherish the work culture, environment, leave policy, awards and recongnition this organization provides. Also, I got emotionally attached to the organization, made many friends and feels like my second home here. Due to these reasons I don't want to leave the company but apart from this want to grow as an individual. It is important for me at this stage to switch so that I can learn and grow more as an professional.

Thank you for becoming a mentor who guided me professionally as well as personally when needed. I hope you'll consider my request.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task. The writer clearly states what they have learned in their present administration role, including physical security aspects, organization policies, and vendor management. Furthermore, the writer suggests how the company would benefit by mentioning their deep understanding of the company's mission, vision, and future growth alongside the opportunity to explore new skills in the newly created Information Security department. Finally, the letter clearly explains why the writer does not wish to leave the company, highlighting the positive work culture, environment, and strong emotional attachment to colleagues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear opening, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as current learnings, company benefits, and reasons for staying. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using phrases like 'Apart from these function specific work', 'As it's been 2 years', and 'Due to these reasons'. However, some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. Overall, the arrangement of information is clear and coherent throughout, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context, including terms such as 'vendor management', 'Access controls', 'emergency events', and 'mission and vision'. There are, however, several noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'cooperate' instead of 'corporate', 'recongnition' instead of 'recognition', and 'function specific' instead of 'function-specific'. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded. The writer attempts less common lexical items with moderate success, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating decent control over grammatical structures. Examples of complex sentences include 'Being in Administration department from last 2 years as an Assistant Team Lead, I have learned a lot...' and 'It is important for me at this stage to switch so that I can learn and grow more as an professional.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as 'inform you regarding an opportunity of switching', 'from last 2 years', 'it's growth' (possessive vs. contraction), and 'feels like my second home' (missing subject pronoun). Punctuation is generally acceptable, placing this text firmly at a Band 6.0 level.
