Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you about my current position in this instituition and need to move to another department for further development in my career.

At present, I am working in the clerical office as an accountant. Since two years, I have been consultling with different parents for some issues regarding payment of tuition fees as well as I am also taking responsibilities of school money. This opportunity makes me responsilble, loyal and forbearing person, and I learn to tackle with hardships by keeping patience.

As I applied for a mathematics teacher two years ago, but at that time vacancy was not available. So, the management hired me as an accountant in this school. Now, I think it is beneficial to be a teacher of mathematics not only for me but also for the students as one of their tutors has left the organisation due to some personal reasons. I think this is the best chance to get my required position because in the clerical department needed number of members are already present.

I have decided to remain committed to the school and continue contributing to its academic and overall growth. It provides a supportive and nurturing work environment. Moreover, the school gives me the opportunities for professional growth. Therefore, I would prefer to continue my professional journey here rather than seek opprtunities elsewhere.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the letter prompt. The response explains what has been learned in the present job, such as becoming responsible and keeping patience while handling tuition fee issues. It suggests how the company would benefit from moving the writer to a different department by highlighting the immediate vacancy for a mathematics teacher due to a departing tutor and noting that the current clerical department is fully staffed. Furthermore, the letter explains the reasons for not wishing to leave the company, pointing to a supportive environment and opportunities for professional growth. The tone is appropriate for a workplace request to a manager, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. Although the content is somewhat straightforward, all bullet points are addressed effectively, meeting the requirements of Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with a logical overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as current duties, the proposed change, and reasons for staying with the company. Cohesive devices are employed, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or basic, such as 'At present,' 'As I applied,' and 'Moreover.' Paragraphs generally flow reasonably well, though referencing and linking could occasionally be smoother. For instance, the transition between discussing past job applications and current teaching needs could be better connected. Overall, the organizational structure satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'forbearing,' 'consultling,' and 'nurturing work environment.' However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the writing, including 'instituition,' 'consultling,' 'responsilble,' and 'opprtunities.' Additionally, phrasing like 'needed number of members are already present' is rather unnatural. Despite these errors, the intended meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the message adequately, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in grammatical structures. Examples include conditional and relative-style clauses, such as 'Now, I think it is beneficial to be a teacher of mathematics not only for me but also for the students as one of their tutors has left...' However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward prepositional uses throughout the text, such as 'Since two years' instead of 'For two years,' and 'tackle with hardships' instead of 'tackle hardships.' Punctuation and article use are occasionally faulty. While these errors are noticeable and require some concentration from the reader, they do not impede overall communication, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.
