Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to request you to give me a chance to work in Finance department of the company. Currently I am working as a manager in the Marketing Department from last two years. As a manager I learned various skills from my position such as leadership, job delegation, and managing work load.
I have been working as a manager from last 2 years. I have good recods of my past performences. For instance I won "Employee of the year" award from the company for zero absence from the work. I have ability to work in difficult situations and make a wise decision that is the main requirement to work in the Finance Department.
I feel strong connections with the company. I do not wish to leave this company that provides me good working environment, good salary, and yearly monetary appreciation. I would like to stay in the company for long time if I get an opportunity to work in the Finance Department.
I am waiting to hear from you.
Your faithfuly,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated what you have learned in your present job, such as leadership and work delegation. You also suggested how the company would benefit by mentioning your ability to handle difficult situations and make wise decisions, which aligns with the Finance Department's needs. Furthermore, you explained why you wish to stay in the company, highlighting the good working environment, salary, and monetary appreciation. Your tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a manager. Although the prompt requests that you suggest how the company would benefit from you moving to a different department, rather than focusing solely on what you learned, your ideas are relevant and sufficient to meet the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter structure. Paragraphs are used to separate different points, such as your current role, your achievements and suitability, and your reasons for staying with the company. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or repetitive, particularly with phrases like 'from last 2 years' and 'working as a manager' appearing multiple times. Reference words and basic cohesive devices are used, but they could be managed more flexibly to ensure smoother transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is adequate, but more varied linking words would elevate the cohesion to a higher standard.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business-related terms like 'job delegation', 'monetary appreciation', and 'Employee of the year award'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'recods' instead of 'records', 'performences' instead of 'performances', and the awkward collocation 'from last 2 years' instead of 'for the past two years'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering natural collocations and careful proofreading of common professional terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Your letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As a manager I learned various skills from my position such as leadership, job delegation, and managing work load.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including the missing preposition in 'Finance department' (needs 'the Finance department'), incorrect preposition usage in 'from last 2 years' (needs 'for the past two years'), and a sign-off error ('Your faithfuly,' instead of 'Yours faithfully,'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the overall accuracy, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message.
