IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Ahmed,

I am writing to discuss the possibility of transferring to another department, as I believe this would be an important step in my professional development.

Over the past two years in the Marketing Department, I have acquired valuable experience in market research, client communication and campaign management. I have also developed strong organizational and teamwork skills while working on several challenging projects.

I believe that moving to the Sales Department would benefit the company as well as me. My knowledge of customers and marketing strategies would enable me to contribute fresh ideas and strengthen communication between the two departments. In addition, my existing understanding of the company’s products and procedures would allow me to adapt quickly and become productive without extensive training.

However, I have no intention of leaving the company. I greatly value the supportive working environment, opportunities for professional growth and positive relationships I have developed with colleagues.

I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this proposal with you.

Yours sincerely,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt by covering every bullet point effectively. In the second paragraph, the student clearly states what was learned in the present job, mentioning 'market research, client communication and campaign management'. The third paragraph successfully suggests how the company would benefit from a transfer, noting that the candidate's 'knowledge of customers and marketing strategies would enable... fresh ideas' and allow for a quick adaptation. Finally, the fourth paragraph explains the reasons for wishing to remain with the employer, citing a 'supportive working environment, opportunities for professional growth and positive relationships'. The tone is appropriately professional and polite throughout for a workplace request letter. The purpose of the correspondence is maintained clearly from beginning to end, demonstrating a well-developed and fully realized response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear and logical organization from the opening salutation to the final sign-off. Information is presented in a progressive manner, moving smoothly from the initial request to past experiences, future benefits, reasons for staying, and a concluding call to action. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each body paragraph dedicated to a single, distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Over the past two years', 'In addition', and 'However' are deployed naturally to guide the reader through the text without any mechanical or awkward transitions. Referencing is consistently clear, ensuring that relationships between sentences and ideas remain transparent throughout the entire letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The vocabulary used throughout the response is natural, appropriate, and more than adequate for a General Training Task 1 letter. The candidate successfully incorporates less common and topic-specific lexical items, such as 'professional development', 'acquired valuable experience', 'campaign management', and 'extensive training'. Word choices and collocations are generally accurate, reflecting a flexible and fluent control of language. While the lexicon does not reach the sophisticated, native-like peaks of an absolute top band, it operates smoothly above the threshold of lower bands by successfully avoiding repetitive or basic terminology. Minor slips are absent, showcasing reliable control over everyday professional phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The candidate demonstrates a strong command of grammatical structures by skillfully combining complex and simple sentences. Examples include relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'while working on several challenging projects' and 'which would enable me to contribute'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the letter. Verb tenses are used accurately to shift between past achievements ('have acquired', 'have also developed') and future possibilities ('would benefit', 'would enable'). The control of grammar is consistent, with no noticeable structural errors or awkward phrasing that might impede communication or strain the reader.
