Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are in good health. I am writting this letter to request my transfer to different department of our company, as I feel it would be a important step towards my growth.

I have been working in my current role for quite some time now almost 2 years, and have learned many many valuable skills in these 2 years, like managing vendors, making design direction, working on master templates and most importantly communication skills. These skills have helped me perform efficiently with productive outputs.

I believe now my skills will be much valuable to marketing team rather than design team, I have been working on presentation decks from backend till now, if given a chance I want to work along the customer facing team where my communication skills can be applied with much better use.

This company has taught me many practical things in life, stood beside me in my tough time, I dont not want to switch the company at this point of my carrier.

Expressing my loyality to the company, I hope you will consider my request of transfer.

Yours Faithfully,

Kushagra Shinde

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student clearly mentions what has been learned in the present job, such as 'managing vendors' and 'communication skills'. Furthermore, a suggestion of how the company would benefit from moving to a different department is provided by linking communication skills to the customer-facing marketing team. Finally, the student explains the reluctance to leave the company by mentioning company support during tough times and a desire to stay loyal. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear throughout. Although some ideas could be slightly more elaborated to reach higher bands, the requirements for the task are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The paragraphs are separated adequately, addressing individual points systematically from the greeting, stating the learning in the current role, the department move suggestion, reasons for staying, to the final sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, such as 'most importantly', 'I believe now', and 'if given a chance'. However, paragraphing is slightly choppy with multiple very short paragraphs, which keeps the coherence at a stable band 6.5 to 7.0 level. Overall, the message flows well and is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'vendor', 'master templates', and 'loyality'. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing', 'a important' instead of 'an important', and 'carrier' instead of 'career'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, aligning well with the band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include 'I am writting this letter to request my transfer... as I feel it would be an important step' and 'I believe now my skills will be much valuable to marketing team rather than design team'. However, there are frequent minor errors, including missing articles ('to marketing team', 'to different department'), comma splices ('...almost 2 years, and have learned...'), and minor spelling mistakes. These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly in the band 6 category.
