Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing you to request a change my department for my career development. After working in the same department for two years, I believe that I am ready to learn and work in other sections.
I have been working as a machine operator in the Die-Cutter division. Now, I have a good understading of this machine. Even, I can fix some problems without the help of mechanic. As a result, I would like to operate a machine in the Flexo division. This current position helped me to learn about various operations of machine. Also, here I got the experience of working in a group.
Although, there is no position available in other departments, I would like to switch my job with an operator of any section. Company would get some benefits from it. For example, company will get two operators who are well-trained for the two difierent machines. In addition, we can cover each others' shifts in the future.
However, I do not want to leave this company to develop my career. The only reason behind this is that the workers are treating each other like a family. There is no conflicts between seniors and juniors. No one would like to leave this kind of a work enviornment.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding my request. I hope to get a positive response. Thank you!
Yours faithfully,
Meet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. First, the writer clearly states what has been learned in their present job as a machine operator in the Die-Cutter division, mentioning gaining a good understanding of the machine and the ability to fix problems independently. Second, the proposal for company benefit is addressed by suggesting that having two operators well-trained for two different machines allows for future shift coverage. Third, the letter explains why the writer does not wish to leave the company, highlighting the supportive work environment and positive relationships with colleagues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and all parts of the prompt are well-developed and relevant. Band score: 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs that correspond to the main prompt requirements: introduction and current role, department change proposal, reasons for staying, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Also', 'Although', and 'In addition' are used appropriately to link ideas, although referencing and transitions could sometimes be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate distinct thoughts, making the letter easy to follow. Band score: 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace request, including terms like 'career development', 'machine operator', 'division', and 'work environment'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'understading' instead of 'understanding', 'difierent' instead of 'different', and 'enviornment' instead of 'environment'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited control of less common lexical items. To reach higher bands, the writer should incorporate more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy. Band score: 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and subordinate clauses ('Although, there is no position available...'). However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as 'I am writing you to request a change my department' (unnecessary article and preposition issues), 'Even, I can fix some problems' (awkward phrasing), and 'There is no conflicts' (subject-verb agreement error). Despite these frequent minor errors, they rarely impede overall communication. Band score: 6.0.
