Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing for a request to change my current estimation department to project management department. I have been working since two years in the same estimating department, but now I feel that I need to change my career towards the management side for my long term goal.

I have developed many important skills from my current job such as oral and verbal communication, negotiation and coordination with a team and clients. Working as an Estimator, I am not only good with numerical numbers but also, I am confident with my management skills because I have been contacted with different clients, vendors and subcontractors.

I believe that this decision would also beneficial for you because I have gained both required skills from my present job. Managing projects will require both practial and theoritical knowledge, and I believe that it would be easier for you and me as well to handle the projects easily.

As I am working since long time with you so I am comfertable and famaliar with our office culture, with our team and clients, so I do not need to spend more time to get familiar again with management team.

I hope you will accept my request. Looking forward to your

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all three bullet points required in the task instructions. They successfully state what has been learned in their present job, mentioning communication, negotiation, and coordination skills developed over two years. They suggest how the company would benefit by highlighting that moving them to the project management department will save training time and ensure smooth project handling. Furthermore, they explain why they do not wish to leave the company by expressing comfort and familiarity with the office culture, team, and clients. However, the letter is slightly cut off at the very end, missing a formal sign-off. Overall, the ideas are relevant and adequately developed to meet the requirements of Band 6.5, which rounds to a 6.0 based on standard whole or half-band increments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established in the opening paragraphs. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as current skills, company benefits, and reasons for staying. However, some logical transitions and cohesive devices feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'I believe that'. Referencing is generally clear, though minor flow issues occur towards the end of the text where the sentence structure breaks off abruptly before a proper closing. Progression is maintained adequately throughout, allowing the reader to follow the narrative easily. These features align well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. The candidate attempts some less common lexical items, such as 'estimation department', 'subcontractors', and 'familiar', but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'writing for a request', 'numerical numbers', 'practial and theoritical', and 'comfertable'. Spelling errors like 'comfertable' and 'famaliar' occur, though they do not impede communication. The range is minimally sufficient to handle the general workplace topic, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Working as an Estimator, I am not only good with numerical numbers but also, I am confident with my management skills'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, including 'working since two years' (should be 'working for two years' or 'working here for two years') and 'been contacted with' (should be 'in contact with'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors is characteristic of Band 6.0.
