Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr Adam Tank,
I am writing to request you for my transfer to the Artificial Intelligence department which is managed by Mrs Maria Adams.
During last few years, I have upskilled myself working under your department in many ways, such as working in different teams, working under pressure, and constantly upskilling myself with new technologies.
As you know in recent times, Artificial Intelligence is booming extremely well and most of the companies want their employees to be learning this new technology; similary, our company is also encouraging a lot on this. Moreover, I have upskilled myself with the current trends in this novel technology. Hence, it would be really helpful for the company to have me in the Artificial Intelligence department.
While I want to switch to another department, I do not wish to leave the organization because the work culture here is top-notch. In addition to that, there are lot of amazing projects which are very helpful to build career. Thus, I want to change the department for better career prospects.
Thank you for your consideration and l am looking forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
Alex Parker

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You clearly state what you have learned in your present job, such as "working in different teams, working under pressure." You suggest how the company would benefit by stating that Artificial Intelligence is booming and you have upskilled yourself with the current trends, making it helpful for the company to have you in that department. Finally, you explain why you do not wish to leave the company, pointing out the top-notch work culture and amazing projects. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter to a manager. Ideas are relevant and well-developed, fully satisfying the requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear logical progression from the opening request to the discussion of past experience, company benefits, reasons for staying, and the polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main idea grouped into its own paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using words such as "Moreover," "While," and "Thus" to connect ideas. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly repetitive or mechanical, particularly with the repeated use of the phrase "upskilled myself" across consecutive paragraphs, which affects the flow. Overall organisation is clear and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common business and professional phrases such as "upskilled myself," "artificial intelligence department," and "career prospects." However, there is some noticeable repetition, particularly with the verbs "upskill" and "work," which appear multiple times in close proximity. There are also minor awkward collocations or phrasing issues, such as writing "request you for my transfer" instead of "request a transfer," and "encouraging a lot on this" rather than "encouraging this trend." Nevertheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. You successfully use subordinate clauses and complex structures, such as in the sentence "While I want to switch to another department, I do not wish to leave the organization because the work culture here is top-notch." There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward prepositions, such as "During last few years" (missing the article 'the') and "request you for my transfer" (unnecessary object 'you'). Punctuation is generally sound, and despite the occasional errors, they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your message.
