Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I have been working in this company for two years in customer service department. Being a part of a customer service representative I had resolved a number of issues raised by customers within the deadline. Additionally, for that I had received best employee of the month thrice. My current post taught me to stay calm in every situation and think out of the box to facilitate and satisfy the customer so that the customer will be happy with the company's services.

Since, I have been working in the same department for two years which is enough period to learn about the temperament and behavior of an individual. Now I would like to move to another department of the company. I would appreciate if you move me to HR. I believe now I have learned enough to resolve employees' problems too. I can utilize my problem solving skills in HR which would be beneficial for me as well as for the company.

Furthermore, I do not want to leave the company as this company has taught me a lot; in addition, I am comfortable with the company's policies and environment. I want to see myself grow under this company. I am looking forward to hearing a positive response from you.

Thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Zara Khan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all bullet points required in the prompt. First, Zara outlines what she has learned in her current job, mentioning that she has developed problem-solving skills and learned to stay calm under pressure. Second, she suggests how the company would benefit by moving her to the HR department, explaining that she can help resolve employees' problems just as she has resolved customer issues. Third, she clearly explains why she does not wish to leave the company, citing her comfort with company policies, the environment, and her desire to grow professionally within the organisation. All parts of the task are adequately addressed with relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The response is appropriately divided into distinct paragraphs for the introduction, the discussion of the current role, the proposal for the department transfer, the reasons for staying, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Additionally', 'Since', 'Furthermore', and 'in addition'. However, some referencing and linking could be smoother, such as 'Additionally, for that I had received', which sounds slightly awkward. Overall, the message flows logically from past experience to future plans and justification.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal letter. Phrases like 'think out of the box', 'problem solving skills', and 'company's policies and environment' show a reasonable command of language. However, there are some minor word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'Being a part of a customer service representative' (which should be 'Working as a customer service representative' or 'As a customer service representative') and 'which is enough period' (which needs an article: 'which is a sufficient period'). Spelling is accurate throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Since, I have been working in the same department for two years which is enough period...' and 'I believe now I have learned enough to resolve employees' problems too.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, including unnecessary commas after 'Since' and awkward preposition usage in 'in customer service department' (missing article) and 'if you move me to HR'. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate.
