Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rajiv,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this to request you for my promotion in the Electrical Engineering section.

I have been working under your supervision from last two years and over the period I gained qualitative knowledge of repair section. In addition to that I have hands on experience with various modems, I have improved not only my troubleshooting but also communication skills over the years.

I strongly believe that my transfer in the another department will bring more benefits. The primary advantage is that production will increase effeciently because private engineers labour cost will decrease. Moreover, my presence will assist both departments repair and warehouse effectively.

Although job location is far from my house, supports from colleguages and management teams inspired me to work everyday. Apart from this I will have more opportunities to enhance my professional skills.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward for your positive prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Yash Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate has addressed all parts of the prompt, though there is a slight confusion in the opening where a 'promotion' is requested rather than a transfer ('move to a different department'). Despite this initial misuse of terminology, the letter successfully covers what has been learned in the present job ('gained qualitative knowledge of repair section'), suggests how the company would benefit ('production will increase effeciently because private engineers labour cost will decrease'), and explains why the writer does not wish to leave the company (supportive colleagues and management, plus professional development opportunities). The ideas are generally relevant and appropriate for a General Training letter, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is structured with appropriate paragraphing, opening with a polite salutation and closing with a standard sign-off. The overall arrangement is coherent, and ideas follow a logical sequence from the introduction to the specific bullet points requested in the prompt. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly handled, such as 'Apart from this' and the abrupt transitions between paragraphs. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences lack smooth inter-sentence connections. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to divide distinct points, placing the response comfortably at a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'supervision', 'troubleshooting', and 'professional skills'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'qualitative knowledge' is likely intended to be 'qualitative experience' or 'quality knowledge', 'effeciently' is misspelled, and phrases like 'request you for my promotion' and 'transfer in the another department' show awkward preposition use and lexical mismatch. Because these errors do not impede overall communication, the lexical resource fits the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Although job location is far from my house, supports from colleguages and management teams inspired me to work everyday.' There are several grammatical errors present, including preposition misuse ('from last two years' instead of 'for the last two years'), missing articles ('The primary advantage', 'job location'), and subject-verb agreement or pluralization issues ('supports from colleguages'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur frequently, they rarely impede the reader's understanding, matching the criteria for a Band 5.5.
