Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request a transfer to the marketing department. I have been working with the company for two years now, I started my journey in the sales area as an associate. As I was pursuing my master's in marketing at the time, I was not eligible for marketing field job positions. However, I learned many skills in the sales department such as time management, teamwork, professional communication skills, and proposal creation.

I believe my invaluable experience in the sales department would bring inevitable benefits. Teamwork and time management are the most crucial transferable skills which will support successful planning and execution of campaigns within deadlines. Additionally, excellent communication is vital to deal with clients and manage team efficiently. Moreover, my education in marketing field will not only fill the gaps but also provide me with an opportunity to utilise theory-based learning in real time projects.

I received an offer from the job placement center from the school. However, I grew up with the company and learnt various lessons, I am looking for bright future here. I would therefore appreciate if you could move me to the marketing department in the next year.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

DP.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, they clearly stated what was learned in the present sales job, mentioning specific skills such as 'time management, teamwork, professional communication skills, and proposal creation.' Second, they explained how the company would benefit from their move to marketing, noting how transferable skills and education will support project execution and client relations. Third, they gave reasons for staying with the company, expressing a strong loyalty and desire for a bright future despite external offers. The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter, and the purpose is communicated clearly throughout. Ideas are well-supported and fully developed, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, each dedicated to a distinct part of the prompt. Information and ideas flow reasonably well from past experiences to future benefits and reasons for remaining in the company. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Additionally,' 'Moreover,' and 'However,' ensuring a smooth progression of ideas. Although referencing and linking are generally clear, there are minor moments where transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach higher band levels. Overall, the structural progression of the letter demonstrates clear logical organisation, fully supporting a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The candidate uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal workplace request. Phrases like 'invaluable experience,' 'transferable skills,' and 'utilise theory-based learning' demonstrate an ability to incorporate less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation. There are a few minor lexical awkwardnesses or slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'job placement center from the school' or 'marketing field job positions,' but these do not impede communication. The overall vocabulary range allows for sufficient precision in conveying professional intentions, justifying a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively (e.g., 'As I was pursuing my master's in marketing at the time, I was not eligible...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few minor grammatical slips such as a comma splice in the opening paragraph ('two years now, I started') and a missing preposition ('appreciate if you could move me'). However, these errors are non-systematic and do not obscure meaning, showing good overall control of grammar and punctuation that aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
