IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- say what you have learned in your present job
- suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
- explain why you do not wish to leave the company
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are enjoying your day so far. I am writing to apply for the vacant position in the editing department as an editor in our organization. In the past two years as a junior journalist, I have improved my communication skills and gained in-depth knowledge of journalism.
Also, alongside gaining experience in the field, I completed my graduation in Journalism and would like to be employed in the field of my interest. Due to that, my deep knowledge and experience in editing newsletters would assist the organization in succeeding in forthcoming projects.
This institution has not only provided me with employment opportunities but also improved my basic skills of teamwork and cooperation, which can be used further as an Editor. If I am provided with an opportunity to work in a different department, I can assure you that I will use all my expertise and knowledge to bring the company to a top level. Also, this position is significantly important for my career development and if provided the position, I will stop applying to other organizations.
Looking forward to discussing this further and thanking you for your time and consideration in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Himani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all the bullet points effectively. You clearly state what you have learned in your present job, mentioning that you have improved your communication skills and gained in-depth knowledge of journalism. You suggest company benefits by explaining how your deep knowledge and experience in editing newsletters would assist the organization in succeeding in forthcoming projects. Finally, you explain why you do not wish to leave the company by highlighting how the institution provides employment opportunities and improves your basic skills, while noting that moving internally is important for your career development. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are relevant, fully developed, and supported, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing the prompt bullets, and an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, learning points, company benefits, and reasons for staying. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Due to that', and 'If I am provided with' are used to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive at the start of sentences. Overall, there is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response, ensuring the reader can easily follow your message from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, such as 'vacant position', 'in-depth knowledge', 'forthcoming projects', and 'career development'. Less common lexical items are used with general awareness of style and collocation, although there are a few slightly awkward phrasings like 'stop applying to other organizations' in a workplace transfer context. Spelling and word choice errors are minimal and do not impede communication. With slightly more varied professional collocations, this could easily reach a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conditional clauses ('If I am provided with an opportunity...') and relative clauses effectively. There are frequent error-free sentences, and your control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong. Minor issues, such as the slightly unnatural phrasing in 'if provided the position, I will stop applying to other organizations', do not impede communication. Overall, the grammatical range and accuracy align well with the descriptors for Band 7.0.
