Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mark,
I hope you are well and that your current project deadlines are going smoothly. I am writing to formally express my strong interest in transferring from the Finance to the Sales department, as I believe this would be a significant step towards my career development.
Since joining the company, I have developed key core skills, including communication, accounting and financial record management. Additionally, in my current role, I have closely monitored budgeting for various internal teams and authored internal memos and private company blogs.
I believe that moving to the Sales department will allow me to help the company address critical areas, such as revering declining sales revenut while maintaining a 30 percent profit margin. These are highly beneficial avenues where the company should invest to increase its market share. Furthermore, I have already proactively addressed our sales resource shortage by successfully training team members through our internal incubation program.
The company has provided me with excellent perks and an invaluable learning environment. I remain completely dedicated to the organization and deeply appreciate the trust the leadership team has placed in me.
I have already submitted a formal request for changing a departmental transfer and hope you will review it favorably. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Viral Siddhapura

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You clearly state what you have learned in your present job, mentioning core skills such as communication, accounting, and financial record management. Furthermore, you suggest how the company would benefit from your departmental transfer by addressing critical sales areas and mentioning your proactive training efforts. You also explain why you do not wish to leave the company, highlighting the excellent perks and the invaluable learning environment. The tone is appropriately formal and professional for a letter to a manager. All requirements of General Training Writing Task 1 have been thoroughly met with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The letter is logically sequenced and easy to follow from the opening salutation to the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used very effectively, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt (such as current skills, company benefits, and reasons for staying). Cohesive devices are handled naturally throughout the text, as seen in words like 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'The company has provided me'. Referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is smooth and logical, ensuring the reader never has to struggle to follow your career goals.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a wide and flexible vocabulary range suitable for a professional request letter. Phrases like 'formally express my strong interest', 'proactively addressed', and 'invaluable learning environment' show a good command of less common lexical items. However, there are a couple of minor typographical or word-choice errors, such as 'revering declining sales revenut' instead of 'reversing declining sales revenue', and 'for changing a departmental transfer' which sounds slightly awkward. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary use is precise and effectively communicates your professional intent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures used with generally high accuracy. Sentences such as 'Since joining the company, I have developed key core skills...' and 'I believe that moving to the Sales department will allow me to help the company address critical areas...' demonstrate strong syntactic control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While there is a minor slip regarding preposition use in 'request for changing a departmental transfer', this does not impede communication. Your overall grammatical control easily supports a Band 7.5 to 8.0 score.
