Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope that you are doing well. I am writing this to request you about my transer to a different department in the company for my professional growth.

Over the past two years, I have gained invaluable experience, where I have developed my interpersonal communication, problem-solving and strong organizational skills. Furthermore, my ability to multi-task has also been forstered during my work here. Not only this, but the I was able to discover the company's operational standards effectively.

I believe that shifting to another department will enable me to apply my professional skills for company's growth as well as my personal enhancement. My abilities and experience would contribute significantly to the new team, where I will be able to acquire more skills and responsibilities.

I am willing to get the transfer within the organization but never intend to leave the company because of the team support and career prospects it provides.

Yours Sincerely,

Devanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student has successfully addressed all bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, you clearly stated what was learned in your present job, mentioning interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills over the past two years. Second, you suggested how the company would benefit by explaining that shifting departments allows you to apply professional skills for overall company growth and brings fresh experience to a new team. Finally, you explained why you do not wish to leave the company, citing team support and career prospects. The tone is suitably formal and appropriate for a workplace letter to a manager. All requirements of the task have been met effectively and fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear and logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as your past learnings, future benefits to the company, and reasons for staying. Cohesive devices are generally used well, with transition words like 'Furthermore' and 'Not only this, but' helping to connect thoughts, although the latter contains a slight grammatical slip ('the I was able'). Overall organisation is coherent, and referencing is mostly clear, allowing the reader to follow your career aspirations and rationale easily.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'invaluable experience', 'interpersonal communication', 'operational standards', and 'professional growth'. While there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward collocations—such as 'request you about my transer' instead of 'request a transfer', and 'personal enhancement' rather than 'personal development'—these do not impede communication. The spelling of words is generally good, with only one typographical error ('forstered' instead of 'fostered' and 'transer' instead of 'transfer'), demonstrating an adequate and functional range for general task requirements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. You successfully use relative clauses ('where I have developed...') and conditional or infinitive structures ('will enable me to apply...'). However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'request you about my transer' (incorrect preposition and spelling) and 'the I was able to discover' (extra article 'the'). Punctuation is generally correct, and while errors exist, the majority of your sentences are clear and your grammatical slips do not impede overall communication.
