Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Dr. Mohannad,
I hope you are doing well.
I am Jessica from dermatology department and I”ve been working for here two years with good standing and evaluation from my head supervisor. Working in this department earned me so much knowledge and experience specially for laser and skin treatment.
I am writing to request for transfer to different department, which is the emergency unit. Since the company is open for this position, I think I a suitable for that position because I have my experience working in emergency unit when I was in the Philippines. I will use this experience to render my skills and knowledge like responding for clients with urgent care, doing triage for emergency clients.
I’ve been so dedicated to my work in this company and I wish to stay because of the good, well-respected management, and a kind colleagues. Leaving the company is not my option because of the good people that surrounds me and unending knowledge and experience I’m earning.
Thank you for kind consideration and I hope for a positive feedback.
Yours Faithfully,
Jessica Cabrera

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering what has been learned in the present job, suggesting how the company would benefit from the transfer, and explaining why the writer does not wish to leave. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. While the explanation of past experience and the desire to stay are clear, the suggestion of how the company would benefit is slightly limited and lacks deeper elaboration regarding your added value to the emergency unit. The tone is appropriate for a workplace request letter, maintaining a professional yet personal approach throughout the text.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as past learning, transfer intentions, and reasons for staying. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, particularly with transitions between sentences and referencing. For example, expressions like 'moving to a different department, which is the emergency unit' and the linking of ideas in the final paragraph could flow more naturally. Paragraphs are identifiable, but the internal logical progression relies on basic connectors rather than flexible cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the intended message. There are successful attempts to use less common workplace-related vocabulary, such as 'good standing', 'evaluation', and 'triage'. However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as saying 'working for here two years' instead of 'working here for two years', and 'request for transfer to different department' where an article is missing. Additionally, awkward phrasing like 'render my skills' slightly detracts from precision. These minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Since the company is open for this position, I think I a suitable for that position...' There are some noticeable errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions, including missing verbs ('I think I a suitable'), incorrect prepositions ('in dermatology department'), and punctuation slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can readily grasp the meaning. Complex structures are attempted, but control over them is inconsistent, placing the grammatical range firmly in the middle tier.
