Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well.

My name is Zara Shaikh. I have been working in customer care sevices for two years. As a customer care representative I have learned a lot. I learned how to deal with a furious customer, satisfy the customer, assist and resolve the issues within a deadline. My job taught me to be patient and calm in every situation. In addition, my communication skills have also improved.

I would like to move to the HR department. I believe that it would be beneficial for the company too. Since, my current job is mostly related to solving issues and satisfy the customers. In my opinion, I am capable enough to handle the employees of the company and facilitate them. Two years are enough to work in a same department now I want to learn new things and gain new experience which will be beneficial for my career too.

I want to continue my job and do not want to leave to the company. I want that the company will get benefit from my experience; in addition, I am comfortable with the company's policies and environment and see my growth with this company. I am looking foward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Zara Shaikh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining what has been learned in the present job, suggesting a benefit to the company, and explaining the desire to stay. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering customer care experience such as handling difficult customers and staying calm under pressure. However, some areas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the suggestion of how the company would benefit from moving to the HR department relies on a rather generalized statement that being able to solve issues in customer service naturally translates to facilitating employees in HR. This shows a clear attempt at fulfilling all bullet points, fitting the characteristics of addressing all parts while leaving some ideas less fully elaborated than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and recognisable paragraph structure. There is a logical progression from introducing the current role and achievements, to proposing the department change, and finally explaining the commitment to the company. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In addition' and 'Since', though referencing and transitional links are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in the phrasing 'Since, my current job is mostly related to solving issues and satisfy the customers.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct topics, contributing to an overall clear structure that guides the reader successfully through the message.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is attempted for the task, including phrases like 'career development,' 'communication skills,' and 'customer care representative.' However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent the score from being higher. For example, 'sevices' contains a spelling error, and there are awkward word choices or word forms such as 'solve issues and satisfy the customers' (instead of satisfying) and 'leave to the company' (instead of leave the company). Less common vocabulary is attempted with some imprecision, but the meaning remains clear throughout without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I learned how to deal with...' and 'which will be beneficial for my career too.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as sentence boundary issues and awkward phrasing like 'Two years are enough to work in a same department now I want to learn...' (run-on sentence), and preposition usage in 'work in a same department' (instead of the same). Punctuation errors also appear in the unnecessary comma placement after 'Since'. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended message.
