Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to inform you that I have been working as a GIS specialist in mining section for 2 years and I feel it is very important for my career development to move to the petroleum section of the Department of Energy and Mining.

Since I have started this job I learnt so much from this job and from you to how to make mining tenaments, making maps using Arc GIS software and report writing. Also, how to be responsible on each coordinates that we use in our reports.

I also want to bring your attention to Amaya, she has now completely trained to do my current work. Therefore, I can handover my work to her. Even though I work in petroleum unit, I can help with mining tenaments and it will be much easier to communicate, understand and resolve each matter within these two sections by me being at petroleum unit.

I do not wish to leave this company since it is the best environment to work in and is the most relavent department for what I have studied for my degree.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you describe skills learned, propose a transfer to the petroleum section, and explain why you want to remain with the company. The examples of map-making, report writing, and coordinating work between sections make the request relevant. This meets the core requirements strongly, while some ideas are less fully developed than others. In particular, the company’s benefit is suggested through easier communication and Amaya’s training, but you could explain more specifically how your experience would improve coordination or outcomes. Your reason for staying is also quite general; adding a detail about your commitment or future contribution would make the case more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce the transfer request, describe what you have learned, explain how the handover could work, and give a reason for staying. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “Therefore” and “Even though” show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are awkward or unclear, particularly the transition from Amaya’s training to the benefits of your move. The repeated use of “job” in the learning paragraph also makes the flow less smooth. Use clearer referencing and more precise links—for example, explicitly connect Amaya’s readiness to a smooth handover, then explain how your mining knowledge would support the petroleum team.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a workplace letter, including relevant terms such as “GIS specialist,” “coordinates,” “report writing,” and “career development.” These details communicate your experience and the proposed move clearly. There are also attempts at more specific professional language, though some choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “mining tenaments,” “trained to do my current work,” and “relavent department.” “Bring your attention to” is also less natural in this context than a direct phrase such as “I would also like to mention.” Aim for accurate spelling and natural collocations, especially when describing technical work and your colleague’s readiness to take over.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional idea in “Even though I work in petroleum unit, I can help…” and the explanation beginning “Since I have started this job.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “Since I have started” would be more naturally expressed as “Since starting” or “Since I started,” and “I learnt … from you to how to make” has an incorrect construction. Articles and prepositions are also missing or awkward in phrases such as “in mining section” and “responsible on each coordinates.” Review verb patterns, articles, and prepositions, and divide the long sentence about your skills into clearer clauses.
