Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mark,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I would like to consider moving to a different department.
Overall, I am satisfied with my current role as a GIS Analyst in the mapping department. In my current role I learned many information about mining licence and licence granting procedure. It was really interesting for me to understand all the procedures and work with all the required mapping tasks.
However, I would like to get more challages to build my career. I am thinking applying for the geology department as I saw a opening. I believe this would be benefit to the company as I have experence in managing mining licence document and GIS mapping tasks. I can use my current role knowledge to help geology team. Overcome any issues they have with mapping and licencing.
Further, I wish to stay in same company since I gained more knowledge from the company. I am happy to stay and work for future of the company.
Kind regards,
Thilan Senawirathna

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points and maintain a clear, polite purpose: you want to move departments while remaining with the company. The letter identifies what you learned about mining licences and mapping, proposes the geology department, and explains your wish to stay. The benefit to the company is relevant—your GIS and licence experience could support the geology team—but it is only briefly explained. Likewise, your reason for staying is general: you say you have gained knowledge and are happy to work for the company’s future, without explaining what specifically makes this employer valuable to your career. These points make the response complete, while some ideas remain less developed. Add one concrete example of how your skills would help the new team and a more personal reason for staying.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the request, describes your current role, explains the proposed move, and closes with your wish to remain. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “However” and “Further” guide the reader. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, “Overcome any issues they have with mapping and licencing” is a fragment that feels detached from the preceding sentence, and “Further” is not the most natural transition into your final reason. Connect the benefit directly to the previous sentence and use a more suitable transition, such as “In addition.” This would make cohesion smoother and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the workplace and the task, including “GIS Analyst,” “mining licence,” “mapping tasks,” and “geology department.” These terms make your professional context clear, and the reader can understand your main points. However, the range is somewhat limited, and several word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors reduce precision: “many information,” “challages,” “a opening,” “experence,” and “benefit to the company.” Some expressions, such as “I am happy to stay and work for future of the company,” are also not fully natural. Aim to use more precise professional phrases and check spelling and collocations carefully. This will help you express your ideas more fluently and accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, and most of the message remains understandable. The opening and closing are appropriately formed, and the sequence of ideas is clear. However, grammatical control is uneven, particularly with articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “I learned many information,” “I am thinking applying,” and “I saw a opening.” The sentence “Overcome any issues they have with mapping and licencing” is incomplete because it lacks a subject and finite verb. There is also a missing article in “stay in same company.” Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject–verb structure, and review article use and verb patterns. More accurate control of these forms would strengthen the letter.
