Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Sam,

I am writing to request you for my tranfer to reasearch and development department. Currently, I am working as an assistant in file management department.

I am working at this position for last two years. In this time period in learned essential skills such as discipline and file handling. Moreover, I recently completed my part-time studies in the research file management. Therefore, I believe that my studies is more relatable to the research department work. If I started working in the research department, our organization would have more benefits of my academic qualification. I also have work experience in our company, and this will save time to train a new employee.

I would therefore kindly request that you transfer me to the reseach department. I always respect the opportunity that our organization provide me to work here. That is why I am not considering another organizations for this job role.

I hope you will consider my request. Thank you in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Manish Thakur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, polite request throughout. You explain that you have developed discipline and file-handling skills, connect your studies to the research department, and give the company a practical benefit: your experience could reduce the time needed to train a new employee. You also explain that you value the opportunity to work for the company and do not want to seek a role elsewhere. These relevant points meet the task well, though some are only briefly developed; for example, you could specify what your studies covered or how your current experience would help the research team. The letter is appropriately framed, but a little more supporting detail would make the case more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall structure: it opens with the request, explains your experience and the company’s benefit, then gives your reason for staying and closes politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Therefore,” and “That is why” show how ideas relate. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the relationship between your studies and the department’s work could be made more explicit. The phrase “I would therefore kindly request” repeats the request immediately after the earlier explanation, while the final reason for staying is quite abrupt. Use transitions more selectively and develop the progression from your qualifications to your future contribution.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant workplace vocabulary, including “file management department,” “academic qualification,” “work experience,” and “train a new employee,” so your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “research and development department.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “tranfer,” “reasearch,” “reseach,” and “research file management.” Some phrases are unnatural or imprecise, particularly “request you for my transfer” and “our organization would have more benefits of my academic qualification.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for making a formal request and describing how an employee can contribute.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including a conditional sentence beginning “If I started working…” and a relative clause in “which…,” showing some range. The main message remains understandable, but several grammatical errors occur. For example, “I am working at this position for last two years” needs a present-perfect form and an article, while “in learned” should be “I learned.” There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “my studies is” and “the opportunity that our organization provide me.” The conditional “If I started” is also less suitable for a realistic request than “If I were transferred.” Review tense choice, subject–verb agreement, and articles, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
