Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. John,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing to formally request you to provide me transition between the departments in the same organization for my career prospective.
I have learned numerous skills during my current position as an construction office manager such as scheduling, invoicing, budgeting and client dealing. This position not only helped me to build my confidence but also boost my communication skills.
I would like to change my department to production Unit. As I have gained enormous experience in the office atmosphere. I am now interested to learn about the production work, to enhance my knowledge of horizons. This change would be beneficial to the company in many ways, as I could use my management expertise in the production unit and help them to increase the productivity by communicating with the workers and dealers.
As per staying in the same firm, I am very delighted to be the part of this company from last 3 years. This company hired me as a fresher and give me the opportunity to start my career. As a honest employee, I want to utilize my skills in this firm and believing to grow with the company.
Considering the severity of the request, looking forword for a prompt reply.
Yours sincerely,
Kamaldeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points and make your purpose clear: you request a move to the production department, describe skills gained in your current role, and explain your wish to remain with the company. The examples of scheduling, invoicing, budgeting and client communication make the learning point relevant. You also give a plausible benefit—using management experience to improve productivity and communication with workers and dealers. However, the benefit is asserted rather than developed, and the reason for staying relies mainly on gratitude for the company’s opportunity. Explain more specifically how your experience would help the production team and why continued growth within this company matters to your career. The request is clear, though a more tactful, direct closing would strengthen the letter’s purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states the request, the following paragraphs cover your experience, the proposed department and your reasons for staying, and a closing asks for a reply. This makes the main progression easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “As” and “This change would be beneficial” help connect ideas, although some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “As per staying in the same firm” does not introduce the reason naturally, and “Considering the severity of the request” sounds disproportionate to a routine career-development request. Use more direct transitions and make references explicit—for instance, connect your current management skills directly to the production team’s needs. A more conventional closing would also improve the letter’s flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of work-related vocabulary, including “scheduling,” “invoicing,” “budgeting,” “management expertise” and “productivity,” which helps communicate your experience and proposed contribution. You also attempt more formal expressions, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision: “career prospective,” “client dealing,” “enhance my knowledge of horizons,” and “severity of the request.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “looking forword.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they make the letter sound less natural and polished. Aim for familiar, precise collocations rather than elaborate phrases, and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “This change would be beneficial to the company in many ways,” followed by an explanation of how you could contribute. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “an construction office manager” (article), “This position … boost my communication skills” (verb agreement), and “This company … give me the opportunity” (tense). The final sentence, “I want to utilize my skills in this firm and believing to grow,” also has an incomplete parallel structure. Review articles, agreement, past-tense forms and verb patterns, and proofread sentence endings. More accurate control of these structures would make your ideas easier to read.
