You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Khan,

I am writing to request that you transfer me to another department, as I think it is important for my career development at this stage.

Presently, I am working in the oral medicine department, where I have learned to diagnose different oral diseases. Moreover, the clinical exposure further strengthened my diagnostic skills, and I had a chance to learn from the best mentors.

Since I have recently completed my master's in Prosthodontics, I believe that if I work in Prosthodontics department it will allow me to clinically apply my theoretical knowlegde on patients. This will ultimately prove to be beneficial for your company, as currently there is no consultant Prosthodontist in the organization to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for patients with maxillofacial defects.

Honestly, I do not wish to leave this company, as I really like the supportive work environment, which is very important fort professional growth. Moreover, this company has always provided me with opportunities to demonstrate my abilities by pushing me to work outside my comfort zone. I would be very grateful to you, if you could consider my request.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter clearly addresses all three requested points and maintains a consistent, appropriate purpose: you ask to move to Prosthodontics, explain what you learned in oral medicine, and give reasons for staying with the company. The specific benefit—filling the absence of a consultant Prosthodontist and helping plan treatment for patients with maxillofacial defects—makes the request persuasive and relevant. Your explanation of what you learned is also supported by diagnostic experience and mentorship. To develop the ideas further, clarify how your existing diagnostic skills would complement your new specialist role, and make the career-development benefit to you slightly more explicit. Overall, the content is well focused and supported, though a little more elaboration would make the case more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter follows a clear progression: the opening states the request, the next paragraphs explain your current experience and the proposed departmental move, and the closing gives your reasons for remaining and politely asks for consideration. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Since,” and “Honestly” help connect the points, while the paragraphing makes the different purposes easy to follow. The sequence is logical and the reader can understand how your qualifications relate to the company’s needs. To make the flow more polished, avoid relying on “Moreover” for separate additions and use a more formal transition than “Honestly.” You could also connect the final request more directly to the benefits outlined above. Cohesion is effective overall, with some room for more subtle and varied linking.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

You use a good range of relevant professional vocabulary, including “clinical exposure,” “diagnostic skills,” “theoretical knowledge,” “comprehensive treatment plan,” and “maxillofacial defects.” These choices help convey your qualifications and the organisation’s potential benefit with reasonable precision. The tone is generally suitable for a formal workplace letter, and the specialist terminology is appropriate to the context. A few choices are less natural or contain spelling errors: “work in Prosthodontics department” needs a more idiomatic phrasing, and “knowlegde” and “fort” should be corrected to “knowledge” and “for.” “Honestly” is also somewhat conversational for this letter. Refining these details and choosing consistently formal collocations would make the vocabulary more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response includes a useful variety of sentence forms, including a relative clause (“where I have learned…”), a conditional construction (“if I work… it will allow me…”), and a reason clause introduced by “as.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and the message remains easy to understand. A few errors persist in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, write “in the Prosthodontics department,” with the article, and avoid the comma in “I would be very grateful to you if you could consider my request.” The sentence beginning “Since I have recently completed…” would also be clearer with a comma after the introductory clause. These are limited issues; more consistent control of articles, clause punctuation, and sentence phrasing would strengthen accuracy.
