IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter for making a request to move the undersigned from the client dealing section to the Drafting Team.

At first, I would like to specifically mention that at my current position of Legal Assistant in your Law firm I have learnt the basic skills of dealing with the clients focusing on the core of any case, which can lead to accurate drafting of the case files and pleadings in later stage of litigation. Further, I have been actively participating along with the team in collecting evidences in criminal cases which are being dealt by the firm.

Therefore, I am seeking an upgrade basically from my present work profile to the position of Legal Associate in order to reflect my drafting skills. As I have closely worked on collecting the basic details and proofs in the legal matters, I will be able to invest my skills and experience to prepare the documents and case files for the firm for proper adjudcation of the cases.

Further, I would like to express that I certainly do not want to leave this firm because other than investing last 3 years in this firm, the experience which I gained here cannot be denied. Moreover, the undersigned finds the work environment of the firm efficient and accurate which any employee would expect for personal as well as professional growth.

Looking forward to positive consideration from your side!

Your's Faithfully,

Jessica Williams.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you describe learning client-handling and evidence-gathering, request a move to the Drafting Team, and explain that you value the firm’s experience and work environment. The purpose is clear, and the legal context gives the request relevant detail. However, the benefit to the company is less fully explained: you say you could prepare documents and case files, but could make the advantage more explicit, such as improving drafting capacity or helping cases progress efficiently. There is also some uncertainty about the request: you ask to move departments but describe this as an “upgrade” to Legal Associate, without clarifying whether you seek a transfer, promotion, or both. Developing these points more precisely would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the request, explains what you have learned, presents the proposed move, and gives reasons for staying. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Further” and “Moreover” help connect related ideas. This organisation is effective, though some transitions feel formulaic, particularly the repeated use of “Further.” The opening phrase “At first” does not accurately signal the next point, and “Therefore” links the learning paragraph to the request without fully showing the reasoning. The closing is appropriate, but the letter would flow more naturally with a direct, courteous request for a meeting or consideration before the sign-off. Clearer links between your experience and the company’s benefit would strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of workplace and legal vocabulary, including “client,” “litigation,” “pleadings,” “evidences,” and “professional growth,” which helps establish the context. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “positive consideration.” However, several expressions are unnatural or imprecise: “client dealing section,” “move the undersigned,” and “invest my skills” do not sound idiomatic in this letter. “Adjudcation” is misspelled, and “evidences” is generally better expressed as “evidence” in this context. The repeated use of “the undersigned” also makes the tone impersonal. Choosing more natural professional collocations and checking spelling would improve precision while retaining the formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “which can lead to accurate drafting” and “because other than investing last 3 years…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer sentences show an attempt to express relationships between ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I am writing this letter for making a request,” the purpose construction is awkward; “to request” is the appropriate pattern. “At my current position” needs a more suitable preposition, and “in later stage” requires an article. The sentence beginning “because other than investing…” is also structurally unclear. The sign-off “Your’s Faithfully” has a punctuation error. Revising these patterns would make the complex sentences more controlled.
