Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I would like to write this letter to request you to transfer me to another department for my career growth within the same company.

To be honest, this is my first job and I learned various tasks such as handling customer service area, how to work under pressure and continuing doing different acitvities at one time. Therefore, this job not only help me to do my work in a best way, also boost my confidence to work more harder.

There are numerous benefits which help our company to grow if I am moving to differnet department. Firstly, our firm do not have to depend on other person to deliver their messages or for important meetings. As I will provide each and everything in detail. Secondly, my experience will help to reslove the problems reagrding customer complaints and how to handle them.

I do not want to leave the company beacuse I enjoy the environment, the team work and understanding within the employer and employees. Also, the appreciation and support given by our head office make me to work effectively.

I look forward to a positive and prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and make your purpose clear: you request a transfer for career development, describe learning customer service and working under pressure, and explain that you value the company’s environment and support. The proposed benefits—using your experience to handle complaints and reducing reliance on others—are relevant. However, the benefit about delivering messages and attending meetings is not fully clear, and the letter would be more persuasive if you explained which skills or experience suit a particular department and how the move would help the company. The reasons for staying are also stated rather than developed. The response covers the task well overall, but some points need clearer explanation and support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure, with separate paragraphs for your experience, the company’s potential benefits, and your reasons for staying. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposting such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” helps organise the benefits. Some connections are less smooth or precise: “There are numerous benefits which help our company to grow if I am moving” is awkwardly framed, while “As I will provide each and everything in detail” does not clearly connect to the preceding point. The closing is appropriate. To strengthen progression, make each paragraph’s main point explicit and use clearer links between the benefit and its explanation, rather than relying mainly on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “career growth,” “under pressure,” “customer complaints,” and “appreciation and support.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the letter less natural: “handling customer service area,” “continuing doing different activities,” and “depend on other person to deliver their messages” are unclear or imprecise. Spelling errors such as “acitvities,” “differnet,” “reslove,” and “beacuse” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise workplace language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the skills you gained directly and state clearly how they could be applied in the new department.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “this job not only help me” needs a correctly formed verb, and “if I am moving to differnet department” does not fit the conditional meaning. The sentence beginning “As I will provide…” is also incomplete as written. There are some successful structures, such as “I do not want to leave the company because I enjoy…,” but control is not consistent across the letter. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence structure, then proofread to catch errors that interrupt the flow.
