IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- say what you have learned in your present job
- suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
- explain why you do not wish to leave the company
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about the newly posted Project Coordinator role on the company's career portal, and I am interested in working in a new role for my career development.
Fortunately, my current role is Construction Inspector and has helped me to develop the necessary skills to work as a coordinator. Having site experience and knowledge of documentation and coordination with contractors and clients, I have developed the skills to manage coordination tasks effectively.
Considering my work experience, the company will benefit from moving me into a project coordinator role, given that I can work as required due to my site experience in inspection and coordination. Therefore, I could assist the site person if there are any issues on site, alongside working as a Project Coordinator.
To be honest, the company has different kinds of projects, which could help me to experience a diverse range of challenges to expand my knowledge, resulting in it eliminating my choice to leave the company.
Thank you for the consideration. I would like to arrange a meeting to discuss further how I could be beneficial to the company with the new role.
Yours sincerely,
Milan Bodar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you describe skills gained as a Construction Inspector, explain how site experience could support a coordinator role, and give a reason for staying with the company. The request is clear, and the proposed benefit of helping resolve site issues is relevant. However, the learning point is mostly presented as a list of experience and skills rather than showing what you have learned through specific responsibilities. The benefit to the company is also somewhat general, and the final explanation focuses more on the variety of projects than on your commitment to this employer. Develop these points with a concrete example and a clearer statement of why internal progression is preferable to leaving.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the request, describes your current experience, explains the potential benefit, and closes by asking for a meeting. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Considering my work experience” and “Therefore” make the relationship between ideas clear. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Fortunately” does not clearly introduce the point about your current role, while “resulting in it eliminating my choice to leave” makes the final idea difficult to follow. The repeated references to “the company” and “role” also make cohesion somewhat mechanical. Use more direct transitions and make the final paragraph’s reasoning explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant workplace terms such as “Construction Inspector,” “documentation,” “contractors,” and “Project Coordinator.” These help communicate your experience and the role you want. You also attempt more formal expressions, including “career development” and “a diverse range of challenges,” though some combinations are not fully natural or precise. For example, “assist the site person” is vague, and “eliminating my choice to leave” does not express your intended meaning idiomatically. Choose more specific terms for the people and tasks involved, and use natural collocations when explaining your motivation. This would make the letter more precise and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled, including “I am writing to inform you about the newly posted Project Coordinator role” and “I would like to arrange a meeting to discuss further.” The meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical choices are less accurate, particularly in longer sentences: “my current role is Construction Inspector and has helped me” has an unclear subject relationship, and “given that I can work as required” is grammatically possible but leaves the intended condition imprecise. The final sentence beginning “which could help me” also has a long chain of clauses that obscures the connection between ideas. Break down complex points and check that each clause has a clear subject and logical reference.
