IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Peter,

I hope this find you well and good. I wanted to express my gratitude for putting your trust in me and I appreciate the opportunity for working with you over the past two years. I got to learn many new things here particularly how Copilot Agents work and their development procedures.

However, I would like to request consideration on moving me to the AI department. I have worked and learned many great things related to agents and LLMs development and working on them gives me immense energy. I believe that by moving there, I will be able to implement several new automations for the division and those would beneficial both myself and the AI team, ultimately benefiting the company in general. I find my current work to be exhausting and not really enjoyable.

With that being said, I would like to emphasize that I am not considering leaving the company. I consider the problems we are trying to solve are remarkable and culture is great too.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and appreciate your consideration.

Sincerely,

Saif

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and maintain a clear, polite request to move to the AI department. You explain what you have learned—“how Copilot Agents work and their development procedures”—and give a relevant benefit: implementing new automations for the division. You also clearly state that you do not want to leave because you value the company’s problems and culture. The case for the move is not equally developed throughout, however: the proposed automations are not illustrated with an example, and saying your current work is “exhausting and not really enjoyable” may weaken the professional rationale rather than explain how the transfer supports your career development. Develop that link and support the company benefit more specifically.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: appreciation and learning, the transfer request and its benefits, reassurance that you intend to stay, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, while transitions such as “However” and “With that being said” signal the shifts in purpose. The ideas are generally connected, and the request remains easy to identify. To make the organisation more polished, use transitions that express the relationship more precisely; “However” suggests a contrast that is not fully clear after the opening paragraph. The final paragraph could also connect your commitment to the company more directly to the proposed internal move, rather than presenting these points separately.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a professional letter, including relevant terms such as “Copilot Agents,” “LLMs development,” “automations,” and “career development.” The tone is mostly courteous and the meaning is clear. There are some awkward word choices and collocations, though: “express my gratitude for putting your trust in me” is less natural than a conventional expression of appreciation, and “immense energy” does not clearly convey enthusiasm. “Problems we are trying to solve are remarkable” is also imprecise; a more specific description would sound more natural and professional. Aim for accurate, idiomatic combinations and precise wording, especially when explaining your motivation and the value you would bring to the new department.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “by moving there, I will be able to implement…” and the relative clause “problems we are trying to solve.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors do not prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “I hope this find you” should be “I hope this finds you,” and “those would beneficial” needs “be” (“those would be beneficial”). In “I consider the problems we are trying to solve are remarkable,” the clause structure is faulty; use “I consider the problems … remarkable” or “I believe the problems … are remarkable.” Check subject–verb agreement, missing verbs, and clause patterns when proofreading.
