You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writting to request you for moving me to other department in the company so that I can learn new skills, which would help me in my career development. In my present job, I have learnt problem solving skills and analytical skills as accountants regularly tackle complex issues.

Since the company is looking to hire an HR manager, I am right fit for it because I have good interpersonal skills, which general manager is seeking in a candidate. The corporation would get benefit if they train me because I need a little training for this role because I have great leadership skills too.

I want to work for the company for long-term because the working environment in the company is amazing, and my colleagues are quite supportive. The company also rewards hard working employees, so not only the management of the company is helpful but also the comapany provides the chances of promotion.

Let me know what do you think about my request.

Kind regards,

Janish Wadhwa

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you ask to move departments, describe skills gained as an accountant, and explain why you want to remain with the company. The proposed HR role gives the request a specific focus, and your reasons for staying—supportive colleagues, a positive environment and promotion opportunities—are relevant. However, some ideas are asserted rather than developed. For example, you say your interpersonal and leadership skills suit the HR role, but do not give an example of how you have demonstrated them or explain in detail how the company would benefit. The letter therefore covers the task, with some points more fully than others. Add a brief example and make the business benefit more explicit to strengthen the case.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening states your request, the next paragraph explains your suitability and the final paragraph gives reasons for staying. This makes the main message easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Since,” “because,” and “so” to connect reasons. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated “because” in the HR paragraph and the long “not only…but also” construction in the closing paragraph. The relationship between your current accounting experience and the proposed HR position could also be signposted more clearly. Use a wider range of transitions and separate the company’s benefit from your personal qualifications to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “career development,” “analytical skills,” “interpersonal skills,” and “leadership skills.” These terms help communicate your professional aims and qualifications. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “request you for moving me,” “right fit for it,” and “get benefit.” There is also a spelling error in “comapany,” and “general manager” may not express the intended role or person clearly. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard professional phrases, check spelling carefully, and choose vocabulary that clearly distinguishes your skills from the benefits the company would gain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “skills, which would help me” and a conditional structure in “if they train me.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the main request is clear. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “I am writting to request you for moving me” has an incorrect verb pattern, while “the company is looking to hire an HR manager” is followed by “I am right fit for it,” where the article is missing. The sentence beginning “The company also rewards…” is also awkwardly structured. Review verb patterns after “request,” article use, and sentence construction, and break up longer sentences where needed.
