Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Wilson,
I am writing to express my interest in transferring to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step in my professional development.
I joined the company two years ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed working in my current department. During this time, I have gained valuable experience and skills which will be beneficial for me in my future endeavors. Having said that, I think this is the right time to take on new challenges and broaden my professional skills.
I am particularly interested in moving to the marketing department, where I can learn more about the market research, campaign management and brand management. This new role would allow me to explore my interests in digital marketing while making use of my creativity and analytical skills. Furthermore, gaining experience in another department within the company will allow me to understand company's objects more effectively.
I would appreciate the opportunity to suggest any possible openings that may be available. I would also be happy to assist in my transition and ensure that my current tasks are easily handed over.
Thank you for considering my request. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Yours faithfully,
Tushti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The letter clearly states your wish to transfer and gives a relevant reason: you want to take on new challenges and develop professionally. However, the task’s key points are only minimally addressed, which limits the response. You mention learning “valuable experience and skills,” but do not specify what you learned in your current job. More importantly, you do not explain how the company would benefit from your move; saying you would use creativity and analytical skills describes your contribution in general, but does not connect it to a business advantage. You also do not explain why you want to remain with this company rather than seek a role elsewhere. Develop these points explicitly, for example by naming relevant skills, likely benefits to marketing, and what you value about the company.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, moving from the request and current experience to the preferred department, practical arrangements, and a closing. This gives the reader a generally logical route through your message. Linking phrases such as “Having said that” and “Furthermore” help connect ideas, and the handover offer is placed appropriately near the end. To make the progression more complete, give each task point a clear place in the structure: a paragraph on what you learned, one on the company’s benefit, and one on why you wish to stay. At present, the final required point is absent, so the overall development feels incomplete despite the clear paragraphing.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a good range of professional vocabulary, including “professional development,” “campaign management,” “analytical skills,” and “transition.” These choices suit a formal workplace letter and allow you to express your interest clearly. There is also some flexibility in phrases such as “take on new challenges” and “broaden my professional skills.” A few expressions are imprecise or unnatural, however: “company’s objects” does not convey the intended meaning, and “suggest any possible openings” is awkward in this context. “Future endeavors” is also rather general. Choose more exact workplace collocations, such as the company’s objectives, available vacancies, and specific skills or responsibilities gained in your current role.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
You demonstrate a strong range of sentence forms, including complex clauses: “as I believe this would be an important step…” and “where I can learn more about…” are clear and well controlled. Most sentences are accurate, and punctuation and paragraphing support readability. There are a few small grammatical or structural slips. In “understand company’s objects,” the possessive determiner is missing; write “understand the company’s objectives.” The sentence “Looking forward to hearing your thoughts” is an incomplete clause in formal writing; “I look forward to hearing your thoughts” would be more complete. These do not prevent understanding, but checking articles and ensuring formal sentences have an explicit subject would improve consistency.
