Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to express my interest in transferring to a different department within the company, as I believe this would be an important step in my professional development.

Over the past 2 years, I have gained valuable experience in my current role. I have improved my communication skills, learned to manage deadlines effectively and developed a better understanding of the company's operations.

I believe that moving to the marketing department would benefit the

company as well as my career. my knowledge of products and clients would enable me to contribute effectively to marketing campaigns.

I would prefer to continue working for this company because I value its supportive working environment and opportunities for professional growth. I have enjoyed being part of the team and would welcome the chance to take on new responsibilities.

Thank you for considering my request. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further at your convenience.

Yours sincerely,

Hooria Zahid

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you request a transfer, explain what you have learned, and give reasons for staying with the company. The examples of improved communication, deadline management, and knowledge of company operations make your current experience relevant. You also identify the marketing department and explain that product and client knowledge could help with campaigns. However, this benefit is asserted rather than developed; a specific example of how your experience could improve a campaign or support the team would make the case more persuasive. Your reasons for remaining—supportive environment and growth opportunities—are clear, though they could be made more personal or specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised in a clear sequence: the opening states your request, the following paragraphs cover your experience, the proposed transfer, and your reasons for staying, and the closing politely invites further discussion. This progression makes the letter easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Over the past 2 years,” “I believe,” and “because” help connect ideas without excessive repetition. Paragraphing is appropriate and each paragraph has a clear focus. To make the progression even smoother, you could connect your experience more explicitly to the proposed marketing role, rather than moving directly from your general skills to the benefit of your product and client knowledge.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of professional vocabulary, including “professional development,” “manage deadlines effectively,” “company’s operations,” and “marketing campaigns.” These choices communicate the purpose clearly and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. The language is generally natural, but several expressions remain broad or familiar, such as “valuable experience,” “benefit the company,” and “new responsibilities.” More precise wording could clarify the contribution you would make in marketing and strengthen the formal tone. For example, specify the relevant product or client insight you could bring to campaigns. Also maintain consistent capitalisation: “my knowledge” begins a new sentence and should start with a capital letter; this is a presentation issue rather than a vocabulary limitation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The letter includes a good mix of simple and more developed sentence structures, and many sentences are accurate, such as “I have improved my communication skills, learned to manage deadlines effectively and developed a better understanding of the company’s operations.” The present perfect is used appropriately to describe experience gained over two years, while “would benefit” and “would welcome” suit a polite request. Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled. One clear punctuation and capitalisation slip occurs after the paragraph break: “my knowledge” should begin “My knowledge.” You could demonstrate a little more structural variety by combining related ideas with a subordinate clause, while keeping the clear, accurate sentence patterns already present.
