IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request for my migration from Software Quality Assurance to Software Development department of the company.

I started as a junior quality assurance assistant two years ago, and today, I am an expert. I have been learning software development to better understand the implementation and debugging.

Currently, I can check quality of any software within our company and can also develop them. I always wanted to develop softwares, that is why I want to change my department. Having said that, I can develop better software because I also have knowledge of the quality insurance. Therefore, my software changes will take less time in quality insurance which will eventually help the company to deliver faster.

Although I have got offers from other companies, but I do not want to leave this company because I have got full freedom to learn new skills in my free time. My management is very polite and whenever I needed they helped me financially as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you request a move to Software Development, explain what you have learned about development and debugging, and give reasons for staying with the company. The benefit to the employer is also made explicit: your quality-assurance knowledge could reduce testing time and help the company deliver faster. These ideas are relevant and supported, although the learning gained in your current role is less fully explained than the proposed business benefit. For example, “today, I am an expert” is a broad claim; a specific skill or achievement would make your experience more convincing. Overall, the letter fulfils the task clearly, with some scope to develop its supporting details further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is organised in a clear sequence: the opening states your request, the next paragraphs explain your experience and the company’s benefit, and the final paragraph gives reasons for remaining with the company. Linking expressions such as “Having said that,” “Therefore,” and “Although” help show how the ideas relate, and the paragraphing makes the different points easy to follow. At times, however, the connections feel slightly mechanical or the contrast is not fully clear. In particular, “Although I have got offers from other companies, but…” uses two contrasting markers together. Removing “but” would make the relationship smoother. Overall, progression is logical and the reader can follow your purpose throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a workplace request, including terms such as “implementation,” “debugging,” “quality assurance,” and “career” ideas expressed through learning new skills. These choices make the subject clear, and the reader can understand the intended benefits. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “request for my migration” is not a natural way to describe an internal transfer, and “quality insurance” is used where “quality assurance” is intended. “Develop softwares” is also an awkward form. Aim for more natural workplace phrasing and check technical terms carefully. Greater precision in these expressions would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional idea in “I can develop better software because…” and the longer sentence explaining how your experience could benefit the company. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “request for my migration” has an incorrect grammatical pattern after “request”; “Although … but” combines two structures that should not be used together; and “whenever I needed they helped me” is missing a clear object or time reference. The closing “Yours sincerely.” also uses a full stop where a comma is conventional. Review verb patterns, clause construction, and punctuation while retaining your useful range of sentence structures.
