IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You started in your present job two years ago. You now feel it is important for your career development to move to a different department in the same company.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

  • say what you have learned in your present job
  • suggest how the company would benefit from moving you to a different department
  • explain why you do not wish to leave the company

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Adam,

I am very pleased to inform you that today I have completed 2 years of my Entry level role in this firm. I am really happy to reach this milestone and aorkin with out team with you as our manager has always been so good for me as it gave me a lot of life lessons. After joining this firm and working at this role I have learned so much highly valuable skills like managing to finish work on time, brainstorming issues faced with the team and solving them before the deadline.

I would like to request you about transferring me to the different department as I want to learn what other roles are and I am interested in working at other roles so that our organisation can get the most value from me and I can get more hands on experience about different roles.

I am requesting you for this as I dont want to leave this company just to get a different role as this company has give me so much insights and helped me learn a lot of skills. so, it would be highly unappriciated of me if i leave this organisation for just a different role.

your's faithfully,

Eric

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points in the task: you describe skills learned in your current role, request a transfer, and explain that you want to remain with the company. The examples of meeting deadlines and solving team problems make the learning point relevant. You also give a reason for the transfer—gaining experience in other roles—but the benefit to the company is less fully explained; “get the most value from me” is general and would be stronger with a specific example of how your current skills could help the new department. Your reason for staying is clear, though it repeats the idea that the company has helped you learn. Develop these points with more concrete detail and a suitably professional request.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it begins with your work history and learning, moves to the transfer request, and ends by explaining why you wish to stay. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these main stages. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The opening sentence about completing two years leads into several ideas in one long sentence, while the final paragraph repeats the company’s contribution without adding much new information. The phrase “I am requesting you for this as” also makes the connection between the request and your reason feel mechanical. Use clearer transitions and separate related points into shorter, focused sentences to make the progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of workplace vocabulary, including “milestone,” “brainstorming,” “deadline,” and “hands on experience,” which helps communicate your purpose. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “career development” and “organisation.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “learned so much highly valuable skills,” “brainstorming issues,” and “get the most value from me” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “aorkin” and “unappriciated,” along with inconsistent capitalisation, also reduce control. Aim for precise, conventional workplace phrasing and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “as” and “so that,” and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur across the letter. For example, “I have learned so much highly valuable skills” has an incorrect noun phrase, and “this company has give me” uses the wrong verb form. The sentence beginning “I am really happy to reach this milestone” also contains several ideas joined together, making its structure difficult to control. There are errors in apostrophe use and sentence-initial capitalisation in “dont,” “so,” and “i.” Practise accurate verb forms and articles, and divide long sentences so that each clause is easier to manage.
