Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of celebrities on youth and the privacy concerns regarding paparazzi. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the benefits of celebrity coverage is better supported than the counter-argument, which relies on a single, slightly vague example regarding the late Princess Diana. To reach a higher band, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of why the public interest in celebrities might be considered a 'good thing' beyond just fitness inspiration, and a more detailed analysis of the ethical implications of photography.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'former letter' in the introduction, which is an incorrect usage. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the flow between sentences within the second body paragraph is slightly disjointed due to punctuation errors and run-on structures. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear enough to follow without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'modernization', 'awareness', and 'privacy'. However, there are several spelling errors ('benifitial', 'imotivate', 'creats', 'helth', 'limites') and some awkward collocations ('death loss of life', 'get admire'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of the language. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and expanding their repertoire of academic collocations to move beyond basic descriptive terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('stars and directors has', 'youngster get admire', 'sales... got huge rise') and punctuation, particularly with run-on sentences that lack proper full stops. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent grammatical errors prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement rules and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on structures, which currently detract from the overall fluency of the text.
