IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days celebrities are captured by professional photographers wherever they go. Few people opine this as positive trend because of common people interest in personal life of famous people. While others find it unjustified to go after well known persons all the time. In my opinion, the later statement is more sensible. We will discuss both views with examples.

On the one hand, I would say following famous persons whether an artist, leader, scientist or a professional all the time to click their photographs is not viable. The person may be on a secret project which has to be accomplished in stipulated period of time. The unnecessary photography may create an obstacle or delayed the project followed by loss of time and money. For example, if a leader is going foe a confidential meeting to avoid a violent situation in country, but famous photographers are insisting on photo shoot, then, its consequences may be very harmful. Further, photographers not only click pictures, rather, they may ask them some personal and unwanted questions to spill their privacy and career.

On the other hand, photographers need the pictures of famous people to explore their profession. For example, many professional photographers display the pictures of famous persons to attract more client and establish their career. But rather than following them everywhere, they should capture them in press conferences, reality shows or podcasts. In this way, photographers can fulfill their needs while not wasting their valuable time.

To conclude it can be said that photography of well-known persons is not a bad idea. But famous persons are also human beings and they too need space and privacy in their life. There are many occasions when they are available for open conferences or debates and that can be the best time to capture them in camera with their consent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the potential for interference with professional duties and the need for privacy. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the public's interest in celebrities is mentioned in the introduction but not fully explored in the body paragraphs. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of the arguments could be improved by providing more nuanced examples or a more thorough exploration of the 'public interest' perspective to achieve a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For example', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the later statement' (should be 'latter'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the development of the argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using less common vocabulary, such as 'stipulated period' and 'unjustified', which are used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'spill their privacy' (should be 'invade their privacy') and 'attract more client' (should be 'clients'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. A wider range of sophisticated vocabulary would be needed for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Few people opine this as positive trend' (missing articles) and 'delayed the project' (should be 'delay the project'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'going foe a confidential meeting' (should be 'going for'). Despite these errors, the writer's intent is always understandable, and the punctuation is generally correct. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, which keeps the score in the 6.0 range.
