Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. The ideas regarding public interest and privacy are relevant but remain somewhat superficial due to the lack of word count. The conclusion is missing entirely, which is a significant omission for a task requiring a balanced discussion and personal opinion. Because the response is only 211 words, it fails to fully develop the arguments, resulting in a lower score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'Furthermore'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is logical, but the transition between ideas is occasionally abrupt. The lack of a concluding paragraph further impacts the overall flow and structure of the response. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas is hindered by the brevity of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'enger' instead of 'eager' and 'fufurthermore'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic terms like 'good thing' or 'wrong'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'public figures' and 'media coverage', the overall lexical range is not sufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'such behaviours violates' (subject-verb agreement), 'famous peoples' (pluralisation error), and 'celebrities are personal lives' (incorrect possessive). Punctuation is inconsistent, with spaces missing before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a lack of control over complex structures.
