IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Today, with the raising development of digital technology and social media it is getting difficult for famous people to stay away from being posted on digital platforms. Some argue that it is inherent to the work a celebrity does and parallelly satisfies the curiosity of the fans. Others say that the photographers are breaching the privacy and should restrict their profession to public events and places. I believe the later and support the right to privacy for every individual.

In this technology dependent economy, for a well-known person it is almost impossible to avoid cameras. The fame follows people's interest in the private life of famous individuals, and this curiosity motivates media professionals to intrude more and more in their lives. In some instances, celebrities are accused of deliberately leaking obscene photographs

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the required word count of 250 words, reaching only 132 words. Consequently, the task is not fully addressed, and the development of ideas is severely limited. While you introduce both sides of the argument and state a clear position, the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence, preventing a full discussion or a proper conclusion. To improve, you must expand on your arguments with specific examples and ensure you complete the essay structure. The current length prevents you from meeting the requirements for a higher band score, as the task is only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows a basic attempt at logical organization. You use an introductory paragraph and begin a second paragraph, but the abrupt ending disrupts the overall flow. Cohesive devices such as 'Some argue', 'Others say', and 'In this technology dependent economy' are used, but the lack of completion makes the progression of ideas feel incomplete. To improve, ensure that each paragraph is fully developed with supporting evidence and that you include a concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and restates your opinion clearly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the length provided, using terms like 'inherent', 'breaching', and 'intrude'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'the later' (should be 'the latter') and 'raising development' (should be 'rapid development' or 'rising'). The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the topic, but the limited length restricts your ability to demonstrate a wider range of sophisticated or less common lexical items. Focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the later' instead of 'the latter' and the awkward phrasing 'stay away from being posted'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete nature of the final sentence makes it difficult to assess your control over complex structures fully. To improve, focus on sentence variety and proofreading for minor errors in word choice and grammar. The current errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are noticeable.
