IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, digital photography is developed as an art which is increasingly promoted through social media by well-known public figures. Photographers are often seen following them, capturing their lifestyle and showcasing their activities. While some people believe they get to know more about their beloved star in this way, others oppose this phenomenon. This essay will discuss both these perspectives before explaining why I support the former.

On the one hand, the supporters of paparazzi based culture argue that they deliberately want their idols to post regularly on social media so that public can stay up-to-date regarding their daily lives. Similarly, the celebs want attention from the public. This not only provides them with high popularity and fame, but also promotes their income sources without any extra efforts. Film stars are a good illustration of this. Thus, most renowned people hire professional cameraman and carry them alongside.

On the other hand, those who advocate the opposing viewpoint suggest that photographers ought to focus more on the public issues rather than giving special attention to the aristocrat society. Their concern is majorly centred around spreading awareness among citizens towards comparatively highly serious issues such as corruption and human trafficking. If the photographers do not cover such detrimental issues, corrupt authorities will continue to target innocent people and quietly harass them.

In conclusion, although both arguments have valid points, I personally believe that photographers can perform the role of paparazzi, however, not forgetting their moral responsibilities towards the nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a personal opinion, meeting the core requirements of the prompt. However, the response is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which is a negative factor. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat thin. For instance, the argument regarding 'aristocrat society' and 'human trafficking' is a bit of a leap from the topic of celebrity photography and lacks a clear logical bridge. The position is clear, but the conclusion is slightly underdeveloped, failing to fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs. To improve, ensure each point is supported with more detailed explanation and ensure the word count is strictly met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the logical progression between the idea of celebrity photography and the call for photographers to cover 'corruption' is somewhat abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the two opposing views more fluidly. Overall, the structure is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'paparazzi based culture' and 'detrimental issues'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'aristocrat society' (which is not the standard term for celebrities) and 'carry them alongside'. The phrase 'income sources' is also slightly unnatural in this context. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary and focusing on natural collocations will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'digital photography is developed' (should be 'has developed') and 'public can stay' (should be 'the public can stay'). Additionally, 'cameraman' should be pluralized to 'cameramen'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they remain error-free will also help elevate your grammatical control.
