IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, professional photographers click images of various public figures at any point of time, be it in their personal space or public appearances. People like to have the taste of their life due to more interest in their lives and some disagree with that due to privacy concerns. The following paragraphs will be discussing both the ideologies with relevant instances.

Firstly, the negative attribute is that, a public figure or celebrity is also an individual who has the right to live his/her own life by not just sacrificing their lives for the public, they have the choice to showcase their lives to public or not. No photographer or media publication has the right to post on their personal / professional lives unless they are told to do so. For instance, the famous cricketer didn't want to show his daughter's picture, but the photographers leaked the images without their permission, which is ethically illegal.

Secondly, the positive attribute is that cinema lovers or movie fanatics who need everyday news about their loved stars or celebrities will get their dose of happiness by knowing their personal life also through photographers sharing their appearances and fashionable looks. An example like Rakhi Sawant who is an ultimate favourite of the photographers as well as people as she has given every viewer of her access to her private and public life.

Although both the attributes have their own standing, I would prefer that photographers should first ask for a no-objection from the famous person whom they are clicking pictures in the public, as ethically and morally that is right to do so.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding the positive aspect relies heavily on a specific example (Rakhi Sawant) rather than exploring broader societal reasons for celebrity interest. The negative argument is better supported but could benefit from more nuanced discussion regarding the balance between public interest and individual rights. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis is limited, which prevents it from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is expanded with more logical reasoning rather than just providing examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Although' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'both the attributes' is a bit repetitive and could be replaced with more varied cohesive links. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'ideologies' and 'ethically illegal', though the latter is a slightly awkward collocation. Some phrasing is repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'lives' and 'photographers'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to media ethics and privacy. The current range is sufficient to communicate the message, but lacks the sophistication and precision required for a band 7 or above.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the famous cricketer didn't want to show his daughter's picture' is a bit informal, and the sentence 'photographers should first ask for a no-objection from the famous person whom they are clicking pictures in the public' contains a preposition error ('in' should be 'in public'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the frequency of minor errors limits the score.
